Don't know, but I suspect it has to do with Adunadphel's "ethereal" move-through-walls nature and Maeglin's outright walk-through-and-destroy-walls nature.

Maeglin is basically a preview of what Morgoth can do, but he shows up earlier (naturally) and can hypothetically show up much earlier due to vaults, while Morgoth will never spawn until you actually go after him at 5000'. So I could see how Maeglin could be considered more dangerous.

I also find extremely satisfying melting pits of evil mobs with a single Dispel Evil.

you sold 5 potions of slowness for 75 gold. "YOU BASTARD!!!!!"

or "the shopkeeper bangs his head on the counter"
          He did the mash.
          He did the morgoth mash.
          The morgoth mash.
          It was an angband smash.

In NPP variant I have had my scariest moments because it has a monster spell that can bring monster next to you from distance.

There I was, happily adventuring at about stat-gain when *poof* there was Vecna next to me. More than twice my speed single shot killer with ton of HP, I TO it, *poof* there it is again. Time to bail out. Problem is: no *destruct*, no teleport level or alter reality or anything like that. So my only chance of survival is to teleport to stairs if I can.

I teleport, it follows and doesn't kill me, I teleport, it follows and doesn't kill me, I teleport to three steps away from stairs, it follows and doesn't kill me, I move, it doesn't kill me, I move, it doesn't kill me, I move, it still doesn't kill me, I take the stairs.

Easily the scariest eight turns I have ever played any variant of angband.

There must have been GV at that level.

I'm not sure which is more exiting, getting single-blasted to zero or that.
And in this same category: starving to death while frantically trying get to a source of food and watching the HP dropping (all the while frantically gulping your potions in the hopes of grabbing a few extra rounds.)

You can watch Fizzix doing this in one of the "Let's Play Angband" series. He survived, barely, by quaffing potions, eating slime molds, etc. What was really funny is that the whole time, "Satisfy Hunger" was in the priest book #2 he was carrying around!

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

I can't laugh to hard. Well - maybe I can laugh a little, since my game wasn't recorded, LOL!

Don't remember what I was fighting, bunch of stuff in a pit. "You are hungry" and I had nothing to left to eat, so I'm looking through potions and stuff. Oh! What's this? M-C-A - satisfy hunger!!
