    unreal world

did anyone try unreal world? i did after listening to the last roguelike radio. love the theme.

but now a few days later, after a bit of experimenting and two dead chars, i survived my first winter, with winter start in an hard scenario (hurt, alone and afraid) and a good but not stellar initial char. while exciting at start (starving, freezing, carrying wood for emergency fire when berry picking, frostbite, food poisoning, stealing a little food, desperately hoping not to anger the villagers, to be able to make a few traps, pathetic hunting attempts...) after two month in game and the first reindeer furs it became all so very easy. i expected more trouble when starting into the finnish winter in a makeshift shelter, with a week of food reserves and insufficient clothing.

I've looked at that game with interest, and almost shelled out the money for it when it wasn't free. However, never played.

I probably never will, but I watched something that made me want to fire it up just last week, so it's interesting to me that you mentioned this game.

That was "Happy People, A Year in the Taiga"

I streamed it on Netflix, so if you have that, give it a watch. Okay, I'll take off my reference hat now. When work invades my hobbies, I worry.
      You are on something strange

This is disturbing - Sampo actually looks a bit like me, although I lack the attractive hat.

I swear I have seen all of them in RL. I think. I have to go thru our employee records to find out... Even that guy that walks around in white pajamas.

Well, making fun of the visuals of another game when we play sth. where #@H can be an epic screenshot? When you go for graphics and a realistic setting and have survivalist friends, it is probably one of the easier way to create decent art assets on a low budget (it probably wouldn't help with the kind of monsters encountered in Angband).

Thanks HM for the film tip.

P.S. In case this isn't clear, my initial post was a bit bragging --- but really was meant to be a recommendation, if you have enough time to spare it is a fun game to try out, even if it plays completely different than anything else I play.

Imagination makes a lot better visuals than reality.

FWIW I really want to play this -- the viking thing sold me from first glance. I love the themes of bleakness and austerity that usually tie into the true viking settings and this one looks like it has captured that very well.

It's just that my first reaction to seeing those photographic avatars was this: http://www.ruthlessreviews.com/1124/...of-all-time-2/

Just FYI, that has nothing to do with vikings. Older and more powerful civilization, namely Finnish one. That is why I said I have seen those guys. I really did mean that.

I used to say this too, but then I realized for me it is exclusively the story that matters, I don't actually visualize anything when I play in ASCII.

I don't visualize anything either; I just view Angband as a highly complex board game. Enemy symbols represent their stats, nothing more.

Oh no, I play Sil to relax. I do play Go at other times when I have sufficient concentration
