    Happy to see v4

I'm just back from a long Angband break, and I've just discovered this forum, and read the v4 changelog linked in the introductionary thread. Many of the changes listed there are exactly what I've tried to do in my own attempts to create RPGs, and which I considered good features for an cRPG, so it's cool to see this happening for Angband

So I can actually stop coding any RPG attempts now and fully focus on the display and interface side of Angband which was my most active field in Angband related works in the past
I have a project problem? I have no project problem. I start a project, I work on it, it fails. No problem

Unfortunately not. There were three active devs on v4 (that's not meant to denigrate a number of other contributors, of course) - one has disappeared into RL, and the other two have switched their attention to Pyrel. So v4 is essentially mothballed, at least until Pyrel is abandoned!

      Your faith is encouraging.

But yeah, not much is happening with v4 these days. Of course, if you wanted to use it as a starting point for your own variant, you certainly could. If I recall correctly the only major problem with it is that archery was never re-implemented under the new combat system, and that shouldn't be especially hard to fix.

Apologies - it was more a reflection of my own loss of momentum than a reflection on you or the project itself.

There are a series of 'I'nspect bugs I never finished ironing out, after all the changes to combat and slays. I tried to use common code, i.e. so that the inspection data used the same calculations as the actual combat, but never quite finished ironing out the bugs (to do with crits IIRC). But again they're not especially hard to fix, as with archery.

I see. Well, I've become quite clumsy in coding C, so I wouldn't want to do any bigger coding endeavors right now, but who knows.

First I need to find out what's all new in 3.4.1, my only real Angband experience comes from 2.9.x and earlier versions, and I'm sure there is a whole lot for me to explore in 3.4.1

Be aware that v4 and 3.4 are different projects, and most of the new stuff in v4 isn't in 3.4.

            Anyway, welcome back!

              Thanks

I meant to say, coming from 2.9.x there is so much new for me in 3.4, that I'll be busy for quite a while exploring that.

Could somebody give me a really quick idea of what Pyrel is and what is it's relationship to Angband? I have been poking in and out of here and noticed it came up several times, but can't seem to figure out what it is, exactly...

Basically it's an attempt by Derakon, aided and abetted by the devteam, to write Angband from the ground up in Python.

I see. Thank you for that succinct explanation. Is this Pyrel development happening offline, or is there some forum that I don't see where it is going on?

There are wiki pages, tickets and other details (esp comments on pull requests) all on that site, but lots of the discussion happens on IRC (#angband-dev at freenode).

Also there have been a bunch of development log threads - here is the latest.
