    Extolling Virtues

There was a bit of wondering going on a little while ago as to what affects virtues and what effects virtues have in the various Henglikes (Composband and FrogComposband being the most recent ones, with the latter being actively maintained), so I decided to make a topic in the pursuit of trying to shed a little light on the subject.

    ---

    Q: What are virtues?

A: Virtues are a list of optional . . . shall we say, conducts, for a given character to follow. They're opaque in terms of what effect having a high or low score for a given virtue has, though the game is at least kind enough to give you an indication when something you've done has had a positive or negative effect on one of your character's virtues.

Q: How do I get them?

A: Every character is given eight virtues, assuming you set the birth option to have virtues active. Some virtues are guaranteed; most, if not all, races have a particular virtue tied to them. The same goes for classes as well as magic realms. If you get the same virtue multiple times from your race/class/realm combo, duplicates of it are eliminated from your virtue list. If after all that you have less than eight virtues, you randomly get some virtues from a predefined set until you have eight, still eliminating duplicate virtues.

Q: What is the range of values for a virtue score to be?

A: Virtues can be a value from -125 to +125.

Q: How do you affect your score for a virtue?

A: Each virtue has its own things that it's affected by; hasting your character, for instance, negatively affects your Patience, while successfully [T]unneling a square positively affects your Diligence. Also, it becomes more difficult to affect a virtue the farther away from neutral (+0) it gets; to modify a virtue beyond an absolute value of 50, you need to pass a 1 in 2 check; there are additional 1 in 2 checks to go beyond absolute values of 80 and 100 as well (to wit: you must pass a 1 in 2 check to modify a virtue beyond -/+50, a 1 in 4 check beyond -/+80, and a 1 in 8 check beyond -/+100).

    Q: What do virtues affect?

A: Most (but not all) of the virtues on their own have their own effect; Temperance, depending on whether its score is in the positive or negative, will make you grow hungry either slower or faster (off the top of my head, roughly -/+33%). Additionally, most virtues affect your alignment, which has its own effects (generally, making specific types of monsters friendly to you and either raising or lowering your failrates for certain magic realms, depending on your alignment and the realm in question).

Q: What game are you using as a basis for this?

A: I'm basing everything in this topic off of FrogComposband; each post dedicated to a particular virtue, at the time of its posting, will be based off the FrogComposband master branch on GitHub.

    Virtue: Chance

WHAT RACES, CLASSES, AND MAGIC REALMS GET THE 'CHANCE' VIRTUE?

    Races:
    Beastman
    Leprechaun

    Classes:
    Beastmaster
    Chaos-Warrior
    Disciple
    Tourist
    Wild-Talent

    Magic Realms:
    Chaos

HOW DO I AFFECT MY CHANCE VIRTUE SCORE?

The following things affect your 'Chance' virtue score:

    -10 when:
You quaff a potion of liquid logrus and the rolled effect is case 13 (11d66 damage, massive stun, deep cut). Note that the chance of this is luck-dependent; it's a 2/13 chance if you have bad luck, non-existent chance if you have good luck, and 1/13 chance otherwise.

    -5 when:
You are cured of all mutations.
You quaff a potion of liquid logrus and the rolled effect is case 3 (reduces all attributes, 1/13 chance).

    -3 when:
A round of a Casino game (other than the Monster Arena) ends and you have less gold than you started it with.

    -2 when:
You quaff a potion of liquid logrus and the rolled effect is case 9 (baby foul curse, 1/13 chance).

    -1 when:
You fail to cast a spell and your failrate for it is less than or equal to 1d100.
    You genocide a monster glyph.
    You mass genocide.
    You mass genocide undead monsters.

    +1 when:
You successfully cast a spell and your failrate for it is greater than 1d100.
    You eat an unidentified food.
    You quaff an unidentified potion.
    You read an unidentified scroll.
    You gain a mutation.
    You polymorph a monster.
You cast 'Wonder' or 'Invoke Spirits' and the consequent hidden die roll to determine the effect is less than 26.
You cast 'Shuffle' and the consequent hidden die roll to determine the effect is less than 30.
    You polymorph self.
    You make a melee attack with a chaos-branded weapon and 1d10 equals 1, 1 in 7 times.
You quaff a potion of liquid logrus and the rolled effect is case 12 (heal 420 HP, cure all ailments, cause temporary hallucination, 1/13 chance).

    +2 when:
    Your race changes.
Your HP reaches 0 from taking damage not caused by genociding.
You quaff a potion of liquid logrus and the rolled effect is case 4 (temporary lightspeed, 1/13 chance).

    +3 when:
A round of a Casino game (other than the Monster Arena) ends and you have the same amount of or greater gold than you started it with.

    +5 when:
You quaff a potion of liquid logrus and the rolled effect is case 1 (potion of life). Note that the chance of this is luck-dependent; it's a 2/13 chance if you have good luck, non-existent chance if you have bad luck, and 1/13 chance otherwise.
You quaff a potion of liquid logrus and the rolled effect is case 2 (potion of augmentation, 1/13 chance).

WHAT DOES MY CHANCE VIRTUE AFFECT?

The 'Wonder,' 'Invoke Spirits,' and 'Shuffle' spells:
While 1d400 is less than the absolute value of your Chance virtue, +1 to the internal die roll to determine the effect of the spell if your Chance virtue is positive; -1 to the die roll if your Chance virtue is negative.

    Loot quality:
    +(Chance / 50) to chance of good objects (range: -2 to +2).
    +(Chance / 100) to chance of great objects (range: -1 to +1).

Chance has no effect on alignment.

Do you have to play at the casino or can you just leave and enter repeatedly to farm chance?

Just checked, and it's not leaving the casino that gives the plus or minus Chance, it's winning or losing any of the games other than the monster arena.

Did you miss 1 here? I have in my head that that you gain compassion when you cross a hunger threshold while fasting. It's possible that the fasting spell just counts as casting a life spell multiple times while the spell is in effect.

I mean, I searched the Frog Git for VIRTUE_COMPASSION and went through every result that came up, so unless that didn't return what you're thinking of . . .

I'll run a test character later to check this.

EDIT: Checked, and I can't find anything modifying Compassion related to the Fasting spell.

                      You kill a non-unique good [A] when (MDL / 10 + (3 * DL)) is greater than or equal to 1d100.
You wield a weapon that is icky to you when you weren't wielding a weapon that was icky to you in that hand before under normal circumstances (non-normal circumstances being, as far as Sideways/rodent and I can figure, being situations like the game being loaded or such).

                      +1 when:
You successfully cast a Crusade spell and 1d(100 + CL) is less than the cost.
                      You learn/study a Life spell.
You successfully cast a Crusade spell for the first time.
                      You kill a non-unique non-good [A] when (MDL / 10 + (3 * DL)) is greater than or equal to 1d100.
You kill a non-unique demon when (MDL / 10 + (3 * DL)) is greater than or equal to 1d100.
                      Your base WIS gets increased.

                      +2 when:
                      You kill a unique demon.

WHAT DOES MY FAITH VIRTUE AFFECT?

                      Monster friendliness:
When your Faith is positive and (a random number from 0 to 1000) is less than it, generated [A] are spawned friendly as long as they are allowed to be friendly and they do not have a hostile alignment.
When your Faith is negative and (a random number from 0 to 1000) is less than the absolute value of it, generated demons are spawned friendly as long as they are allowed to be friendly and they do not have a hostile alignment.

I think it's -1 when you equip an icky weapon that does not replace another icky weapon in that slot.
The Complainer worries about the lack of activity here these days.

                          Virtue: Harmony

WHAT RACES, CLASSES, AND MAGIC REALMS GET THE 'HARMONY' VIRTUE?

                          Races:
                          Half-Titan

                          Classes:
                          Bard
                          Cavalry
                          Force-Trainer
                          Mindcrafter
                          Mirror-Master
                          Monk
                          Mystic
                          Psion

                          Magic Realms:
Nature, but only as a second choice to the Nature virtue (i.e. Nature normally gives the Nature virtue, but if you already have it from race/class you get Harmony instead)

                          Extra:
All characters who don't already have it and eight virtues total have a 2 in 29 chance of receiving the Harmony virtue.

HOW DO I AFFECT MY HARMONY VIRTUE SCORE?

The following things affect your 'Harmony' virtue score:

                          -1 when:
                          You become confused.
Your satiation value increases and it takes you to Gorged.
You are a class that has special armor weight restrictions and you wear armor that pushes you over that weight limit under normal circumstances (non-normal circumstances being, as far as Sideways/rodent and I can figure, being situations like the game being loaded or such).
                          You wield/wear a cursed object.
You are not a monk and quaff a potion of confusion.

                          +1 when:
You successfully cast a Nature spell and 1d(100 + CL) is less than the cost.
You destroy an object that has a non-zero adjustment to AC, to-hit, or to-dam.
You successfully cast a Nature spell for the first time.
A piece of your equipment gets disenchanted.

                          +2 when:
You kill an evil or good unique.

WHAT DOES MY HARMONY VIRTUE AFFECT?

                          Breeding rates:
Breeders must make an additional check of (1d375 must be greater than Harmony) to successfully reproduce.

                          Charm power:
                          Charm Monster/Ring Bearer power for non-Politicians is increased by +(Harmony / 10) (range: -12 to +12).

Unlike most virtues, Harmony draws your alignment towards neutral.
