    Overview of Variants?

    Hi all,
Every few years I find my way back to Angband and have a glorious time with it and with variants for a while.

I know there's never been a super organized list of variants but I'm finding it extra confusing this time around. There are more variants, a lot of the recent ones are more ambitious in scope, and with a few exceptions, there seems to be less documentation (that I can find, anyway) about what has and hasn't changed compared to vanilla, what has and hasn't been borrowed from other variants, etc.

roguebasin.com at least has a less outdated list of variants and some blurbs on them, but I am still feeling pretty scattered.

Is there a good overview of the differences between major variants anywhere? (Particularly those updated in the last few years -- the changes in e.g. SAngband are a little clearer cut)

    Thanks.

I don't actually know of one, which is a shame. Recently the big movers have been the hengband variants (Chengband, Poschengband, Composband, Frogcomposband) and Sil (if you call that a variant). Going back a bit further you have FAangband, NPPangband and Halls of Mist, and Antoine's variants Quickband, Ironband and Minimal. There's also v4, which was a sort of vision of a possible future for Vanilla by the devteam, and which introduced a lot of interesting ideas, particularly about combat.

For the hengband variants they come from Z so what's changed from V is a list spaning multiple variants and years. What's changed is possibly longer then what's the same. Sil is it's own thing, it's technically angband but a fairly different style of game.

          That is AWESOME. Thanks guys.

I did a little digging around and the most helpful thing I found was actually this comment, I believe by you Nick, from 2 years ago:

I have been taking some notes and may try to put together a concise reference myself, since it seems there's a need for one.

TOME these days is closer to Diablo/Path of Exile than to Angband.
            Still a very fun thing.

That would be great. Report back if you do, I'm currently looking at a possible refresh of Angband's web presence and this would be a welcome addition.
