Problem (graphics) with Zangband on a different comp

So I stuck my copy of Zangband on my flash drive, save files and all, to take to work so I can play it on rainy day lunch breaks like today. For some reason, on this computer the ASCII graphic mode doesn't work right...not all the tiles show up, they aren't lit, and when I move my @ side to side, it leaves "trails..." i.e. multiple @'s appear. In short it's all effed up. I can switch to either of the tile modes and everything works fine, except that I find them painful (not to mention disorienting) to look at.

Obviously it's not a big deal since I mostly play at home, but any ideas why this might happen?

Try turning "bizarre mode" on in the menus and it should go away.

I had a similar problem with version 2.7.3, but it went away when I got the newest version off oook.cz which for some reason is newer than the version on zangband.org. hope that helps.

and speaking of zangband graphic issues, I'm having a spot of trouble with David Gervais' 32x32 tiles in zangband 2.7.5pre1. they show up alright, but they don't match what the tile actually is, for instance a Salamander will have a Hairy Mold tile, and for some reason all objects have a purple potion as their background. I assume one of my graphic files is wrong but I've tried replacing them all and am at a loss. any help is appreciated.

        graphical errors

I'm playing zangband 2.7.3 and just about every other variant I can get my hands on. The error I get in Ascii is that none of the walls/rock shows up....its all black. Making it very hard to play. The only variant this doesn't happen on is Entroband. I tried the bizzare mode and it didn't help with this problem for zangband. The tilesets work fine but I cannot play for more than a few minutes before becoming disenchanted/annoyed. I like my dot floors and letter monsters. If only I could make the walls come back. argh!

If you are running Vista, this is a known problem. A fix was recently found (replacing the font with a Vista-compatible one). This looks like a fix.

Hopefully that thread (or someone here) can tell you exactly what to do with those font files.

            Thank you for the help.

Well it seems the wall fix straightened out the problem for most of the variants except for zangband for me. But at least I have a few others I can play while monitoring the thread. Thanks for the help and the link.

It's quite possible that the problem in Z is a .prf file issue. If so, it can be fixed by (a) looking at your Zangband's font-win.prf (in lib\pref, or possibly lib\user) and replacing the entries for wall characters so that they're like other variants or (b) going into the "interact with visuals" menu (probably by hitting '%'), changing the features corresponding to walls, and then saving them to a pref file.

                Thanks for the Zband fix

I tried the font-win.prf method with no luck so after fiddling with the visual preferences menu I finally got it to work. Thanks for the help, it has been driving me nuts for awhile now.
