If you can't play as a rocket then I'm not interested. Games would, admittedly, be short, but not that much shorter than playing with rockets.

Derakon, please bring back wands of stone to mud. Without them, I don't think anyone but Mages, Rangers or Rogues have any chance. Also, I wouldn't be adverse to weapons being available. US Navy SEALS carry their K-bar knives into combat in addition to their rocket launchers,
Thanks for creating such a devilishly difficult, but delightful variant! Now I know why Debo always clamored for rockets!!!“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

But...if I make a third update to the game, then I'll probably have to make an actual proper hosting setup for it and maybe think seriously (okay, a little seriously) about balance, and Nick would probably kill me, and and and...
I'll think about it. I'm glad you had fun!Comment

Lack of early detection is one, but not the only limiting factor for the non-mage classes. I believe the only way to win is with stone-to-mud, and since there are no wands, the only possible classes are Ranger, Rogue and Mage. My comp win was with a rogue, but I've become convinced that a Mage is the better choice. Also, the race must be High-Elf, because you need to have see-invisible right from the start.“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

So would people actually be interested in me trying to make this into a marginally more "serious" variant? If so, what do you think of the following proposals:
* Warriors: start with at least 1000 HP, so they can take a hit.
* Paladins: deal 500 bonus damage
* Priests: have a 100% success rate using the rocket launcher
* Rogues: even more stealth
* Rangers: half energy cost for activating items at level 30 (thus, double shots with the rocket launcher)
* Mages: no change needed?
Making early ghosts non-invisible also seems prudent. We can start having properly invisible monsters with the Ghost.Comment

I've been playing a bit more, and so far I think High-elf Mage is the most viable of any combination in Rocketband as it stands right now.“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. My last 10 attempts have ended in failure, some due to bad luck, others to inattention. Finally, I have a High-elf Mage that has found an amulet of ESP and can reliably cast Reveal Monsters and Stone to Mud. Suddenly, the prospects are good!“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. We need a Rocketband ladder (an actual one).My best try at PosChengband 7.0.0's nightmare-mode on Angband.live:

If I'm offline I'm probably in the middle of maintaining Gentoo or something-Linux or other.
