    Please identify this variant

I played this a while back but I can't remember what it was called.

Instead of the town it had a countryside map (like Omega) containing dungeon entrances. Notably, near the start it had Farmer Maggot's field(s) complete with mushrooms to collect. The larger dungeons were huge rectangles and some contained water .... ?

    Sounds like ToME2.

Note also that Bardur Arantsson is actively working on improving the (now unmaintained) T.o.M.E. 2 sources at https://github.com/tome2/tome2. He has produced several new releases, including both bugfixes and gameplay and balancing changes. The latest version is 2.3.11-ah. So you may want to try tome-ah as well.

          TOME! THanks, I remember now.

And thanks fph for the info about the new version, I'll check it out.

Additionally, you may also want to try TomeNET, a multiplayer variant of ToME which split off during the tome2 era.

              I loved the near-instant reply:

So here's another one: it had wilderness, and a shop where you could buy (and cure) mutations but buy too many and you'd die.

Anything with mutations is probably a split off of either ZAngband or Kamband...and I don't think that Kamband ever got a wilderness, so ZAngband or its descendants (Zceband, Chengband, PosChengband) is your best bet.

And PosChengband is still actively maintained.

Must be a variant that came before poscheng because you can't buy mutations at Zul, you can only cure them.

Found it, although I had my suspicions. It's gsnband.
