    SAngband Error

    Hello!

I just got a new computer, so I moved along the version of SAngband I've been playing (it's the most recent one) and tried to run it in fullscreen mode. Instead of actually running, it pulled up a black screen and hung, and it did this no matter what I did; I tried deleting the config file, and just starting over with a fresh install, but it won't do anything.

I'm thinking it may have something to do with my screen resolution, which is 1920 x 1200. Does SAngband not support monitors this size?

You do realize that you have not supplied enough information for anyone to answer you.

    Don't you?

Little tidbits like, your operating system, and the version of whatever code you are running. Supplying these will go a long way to getting an answer back.

As I said, it is the most recent release of SAngband. I forget the number exactly but I just (re)downloaded it from their site so I'm sure it's the most recent.

I use Windows XP, exactly the same thing I used to run it under with no issues.

Just guessing, but it may be an SDL issue. You may need to install (guessing again) version 1.2 of SDL - I've never installed it for windows, so I'm not sure, but my blundering ignorance may annoy someone else into giving the right answer.

I tried to download it (from http://www.libsdl.org/download-1.2.php ) but all I foudn was a dll, and I'm not entirely sure where to put this.

Sorry for the questions, if they're rather simple. I don't recall ever needing to install this before.

If it helps, I have SDL.dll, SDL_mixer.dll and smpeg.dll in the top level Sangband folder (along with the .exe and config.txt).

I redownloaded all of them and it still doesn't seem to work; I think it may have something to do with the full screen, as I can run (for instance) Hengband and base Angband.

Is there a way to turn off full screen without loading the program?

Addendum: It doesn't have a config file because I've never successfully opened it.

If you still have your old computer, you could fire up Sangband, generate a config file set to not full screen, and then copy that over. I don't know if the different screen size would still be a problem then.

You could also just resize your monitor, and see if that will let you generate a config.txt file.

In other news, there is a bug fix version available here:

There are no fixes that are relevant that I recall.

Also, I posted the config.txt file I use on the site as well. It's for 1280x1024, but you may be able to get it to work. If it doesn't work out of the box, try replacing 1280 with 1900 and 1024 with 1200, and see if that works.

                        Thanks for your time!

Unfortunately none of them (including resizing my resolution) work. It does still run on the old computer, though. No matter what I do on this computer I get an unresponsive (full-screen) black screen that I can alt-tab out of, but not back into.

I think, thus, I may have not installed something. Does it require something that I may have forgotten? I don't think it's Java-based, although I updated that, but is there anything else I should try downloading? This is Windows XP Professional, should be up to date, using a Intel Duo CPU.

I did put all the dlls in the proper directory. (I had them there originally, but I downloaded new versions of all of them).

I am running a screen resolution of 1208x1024 using XP professional and intel core2 duo
                          I downloaded sangband
Version 1.0.0 (with music) from http://runegold.org/sangband/downloads.htm unzipped it and it ran right out of the box. This is what I get. It seems to be running fine. I did not have to download anything else. I just thought to try it as we seem to have pretty similar systems. So if there is any other way I can help please ask.

It used to work on the old computer, that's the confusing part.

I think it may be something related to the full-screen display. What is the option that needs to be toggled in the config file to get it back to the 'old' Angband visuals - the multiple detached windows rather than fullscreen? I can run Angband and EyAngband and Hengband (the ones I also play) all like that, so I'm pretty sure it should work that way.

AFAIK there is no way to turn it back to the detached windows mode without changing the source and recompiling.
I think this may as well be a font-related problem. Have you tried clicking the window and pressing keys in order to maybe get to the town view?
Or maybe right-clicking and selecting compatibility options?
