    Editing characters

Well, gone back to Hengband after getting it running on the Netbook (given up on trying to compile on Mountain Lion). As a casual player, I am seriously annoyed - a level 6 character with a measly 2.5K gold, and what do I see in the Black Market? A seriously tasty random artifact that costs over 250K gold and which I would buy in a heartbeat even at at level 50...

So, there am I thinking to myself - I've never uploaded any of my scores, I just play for relaxation, so why don't I just edit my gold so I can buy it and play on. Sigh... If only there was a way of hacking my save file so I could afford it... Even with preserve mode, I don't think random artifacts are preserved.

You're going to have to shakedown an awful lot of aimless merchants...

Does heng have debug mode? I can't check at the moment. Try ctrl+a to see if it is an option. If so, 'e' will prompt for stat, xp and gold allocation.
      You are on something strange

I tried something which I think was ctrl-A and got a message saying "Wizard mode not available"

You need to turn on the option allow_debug_opts first. Type '=' then '4' and it should be down on the bottom. Then you may press Ctl+a then 'e' and edit your gold (It comes up after prompting you to edit each of your stats, etc.).

If you are using this character for history (known monsters, etc), you will want to make a backup so you can play it clean. Some wizard-mode effects are sticky!

Ah, this is good to know. I never would've thought to look for this in the options.

Got it working. Found the option, and now have the shield and a decent sword that was also on sale. Next time I play, I'll just have to remember to switch wizard mode off.

I'm not fussed about a 'clean' character record; I'd already switched off the submit score option, plus I usually save-file scum. As I said, I'm a casual player; I'd just like to finally finish Hengband.

Save file scumming kind of wrecks the purpose of Angband. I recommend Quickband for corrective practice...

Eh, as long as he/she is having fun I'm not bothered. It's a singleplayer game; whatever floats your boat. Just don't tell me that I'm playing wrong and we'll get along just fine.

As long as savescummed characters don't get posted to the ladder...
