It was an orc captain that leeroy'd in by himself for some reason.
There were trolls present - if memory serves, they carried stone slabs to bridge the fiery chasms that had opened up, to allow the orcs to cross and pursue the Fellowship. As far as participating in combat, one decided to shove his foot under a door and got it stabbed, but that's about it.
As far as the topic of the post, my introduction to roguelikes came via Moria, though I don't recall whether it was VMS or UMoria. It had the Evil Iggy, though, which I believe was a later addition.
Any original Moria players still around?

I believe that it was an orc that spitted Frodo in the book. The movie used a troll for dramatic effect, I imagine.

Uh? Moria was a dwarf mine, but they dug too greedily, and too deep, and unleashed an imprisoned Balrog who destroyed the dwarfish presence.
Dunno about orcs and trolls at that time, but Frodo definitely took a spear to the torso (or something like that anyway) at Bailin's Tomb. He only survived due to Bilbo's mithril shirt preventing the point from penetrating. It sure wasn't a Balrog at the other end of that spear; dunno if it was an orc or a troll though.Leave a comment:

the expectation came from watching movie. according to movie, some dwarves tried to colonize moria before being massacred by trolls and such.
I don't remember that being in the book

I double-checked. There weren't any monster dwarves in UMoria. Although that sounds like something that may have been in some of the older versions of moria.Leave a comment:

the problem i had was due to the old laptop i was using. i will get back to nppmoria after i finish some other games i have already started.
i was expecting to see dwarves as monsters. than again i have only gone as low as 1000 ft before my old laptop forced a stop to my gameplay.Leave a comment:

I have just found umoria. it's tough getting started, no-targeting, haggling, no color. who needs to change angband settings when you can just play moria.
umm... any recent ladders. or am I going to be looking at 20 yr old entries?Leave a comment:

I found Moria on a Linux CD around 1995 and played it for a while. Later I was looking for similar games and found Angband. Since then I've been sticking to Angband, but Moria still is great in my memory.Leave a comment:

I am happy to say the coding phase of NPPMoria is done. Now I just will play around with it for a couple days to eliminate the obvious bugs.
Hopefully I should release a playable (but somewhat buggy) beta within a week.Leave a comment:
