    Chengband / Entroband

    Dear Chengband fans/devs,

    I notice this is a fork of hengband, as was entroband. If you would like to take any features/ideas/items/monsters/etc from entroband and put them in chengband I fully encourage this and hope you do so. I'm not sure if I still have entroband source lying around somewhere, but hopefully someone does! I look forward to trying Chengband.

    sincerely,

    Brian B.

    I'm enjoying Chengband just as much as Entroband when that variant was active. Both are great.

      Greetings,
      Nice to see you back! If you're looking for the Entroband source, it's here: http://www.furytech.net/mirror.php?g...iant/Entroband

      (Assuming this is the latest version... 1.7.1[?])

      Web cache of the Entroband site from 2006:

      Please note that the Entroband links at http://angband.oook.cz/variants.php?variant=entroband are no longer working!!

      My best try at PosChengband 7.0.0's nightmare-mode on Angband.live:

      If I'm offline I'm probably in the middle of maintaining Gentoo or something-Linux or other.

        Hey Brian!

        So far, I've only sighted Daisy and Maelstrom playing Chengband, so it'd be nice to get a Spec sighting as well! I don't think Dave ever got a ladder artifact (though I also felt Singed Dream deserved one), but he is still around and has actually designed a lot of the new stuff in Cheng.

        But where are Songmaster, Diatribe, Anabasis and Bullseye? Chengband needs you!!

        I know that I've borrowed a couple things from Entro, like Lion Heart and GWoP dropping excellent. And there may be others that I can't recall at the moment. If you have ideas you'd like to see in Chengband, feel free to make requests here: http://code.google.com/p/chengband/issues/list. I'm a bit burned out on coding at the moment, but I do promise to get around to implementing new ideas eventually.

        Cheers,
        Chris

            Hrm, I think we need to be careful about introducing too many uber artifacts. I still think Eternity appears too often in the game, as every single winner or almost-winner seems to find it. It's probably because Robes are fairly common as a base item? I think a good goal would be that only about 1/3 of winner find it in time for the final battle. So maybe let's try increasing Rarity another factor of 3?

            Other than that, Thorin and Crimson also show up a little too frequently for my taste, but that's probably OK.

              Nah ... But some of the players that inspired ladder artifacts are still to be found playing Chengband, even after all these years

              I made the following rarity changes (0.0.92):
              Crimson: 50 -> 150
              Thorin: 12 -> 50
              Eternity: 40 -> 120

                It seems to move quicker than many other variants in recent times, but I'd like to very much encourage Chengband releases to get posted up on Roguebasin so they can be duly counted and encountered by newcomers and lapsed folk alike as opposed to slipping under the radar.

                    Having a lot of fun with Cheng 0.9.1 (0.9.4 was not up yet when I downloaded the other day), playing my cheesy goodness Lazy Spectre Berserker with ironman rooms on. Some of the new monsters you introduced are quite dangerous! Almost got killed by a Tonberry, but killed it and later found some special Tonberry gloves. Fun.

                    I forget, how are store inventory refreshes triggered? Turns spent in a dungeon? Trying to wait it out by resting in the nearby wilderness didn't work. Sometimes I sell so many ego items that I need to clear out the store so they have room to buy more.

                      In standard Angband, at least, store refreshes happen every 10000 game turns (1000 normal-speed turns). But they won't happen if you're in the town, so you have to go into the dungeon to rest if you want to force a refresh. How that applies to Chengband is hard to say; the devs could easily have changed this rule if they'd wanted to. But have you tried going into a dungeon instead of the wilderness?

                        Stores refresh are time based, but they are blocked if you have not gained sufficient experience (or leveled up) since the last time they restocked. The rational was to prevent scumming resources by simply camping out in the town waiting for stuff to restock.

                        After a while, you should get used to the new restock logic. Occasionally, a spellcaster might have trouble locating a required book, or you might run low on !CCW. Try to buy things preemptively, before you actually run out.

                          Ah, I knew something had changed. Not being able to scum the BM for potions forces me to change my playstyle: I've equipped Eonwe in the offhand to protect my potion inventory.

                          Any comments on kit / quest plans? I am taking a very specific route to victory: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=12952 but am not sure what to watch out for other than uniques and Tonberry monsters.

                            A couple of Chengband's changes will probably help berserkers:

                            [1] Monsters that "drop good" can drop useful potions (Healing, *Healing*, Life, Resistance). For example, Storm Wyrms. Because of this, you really shouldn't need to scum potions out of the BM, just kill lots of monsters that "drop good".

                            [2] When non-pet monsters fight each other (e.g. The Unicorn vs Oremorj) and are not in player line of sight, they are barred from summoning. So the common berserker death of wandering too far from the stairs into an amassing armada of dragons should no longer happen.

                            Good Luck!

                              Yeah, I've noticed that one. Actually having an easier time finding *healing* than healing, go figure.

                              I just browsed the CHeng ladder in detail for the first time -- a couple questions:
                              1. What is the game mechanic that allows Hurin or Quickthorn to reduce enemy AC used by Phayss? http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=12816 I noticed he favored weapons with extra attacks for it?

                              2. Is there a rundown/spoilers for the demigod race somewhere? I see that's quite popular (and new) and it doesn't exist in raceclas.txt help file.

                              Also I just updated my dump with abbrev_all so people can more easily make comments about what I should be doing/using http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=12952
