If you try an advanced race or a thrall, stairscumming is almost a necessity

So the plan is for a complete revamp of wilderness, as follows:
        • Travel in any direction in wilderness will be possible (except when you come to impassible stuff)
        • Wilderness will be divided into regions (probably around 50)
        • Travelling from town/lv0 wilderness to any wilderness area you have visited will be trivial and immediate
        • Recall will work from anywhere to home, or from home to a recall point
        • Recall points can only be set in dungeons (probably Nan Dungortheb will be classed as a dungeon for these purposes)
        • Wilderness paths will be no more; wilderness will change smoothly
        • Wilderness will not be persistent; new bits in the direction of travel will be generated on the fly (imagine a standard size level divided into 9, with the player always in the central one and new ones created when the player would have left the central one)
        • There will be 'landmarks' - bits of wilderness the player encounters where the terrain is always the same; dungeon entrances are the obvious example
        • There will be an overworld map to plot where the player currently is; whether that will be a strict one-for-one grid-to-ninth-of-level correspondence I haven't decided

It should be a huge change - I may even call the result 2.0.

        I'm very interested in opinions.
This sounds awesome and I am already jealous!

Maybe I'll have to try contributing some patches finally

I almost mentioned this to Dos the other day! Yeah man, you can definitely get your pro leet stair-scumming on with a thrall without any rage. My first thrall stair-scummed pretty hard but my lack of patience made me shy away from extreme hardcore stairmaster techniques. I expect great things from you and FA.

I checked out your list of landmarks and am drawn to Gondolin and the gates of Angband for my first attempts. I've made a few rough sketches based on these images that I really like:

How big are these supposed to be? I'm pulled to make something gigantic, like a complete level exactly like a themed level. (There's a nice blank template in the themed level file.) Or are these supposed to be more like the size of say, a dungeon city vault, or even smaller?

I dig that painting of Gondolin. Wouldn't mind having a print of it on my wall...

If you check out Funnies tab here on oook and then Site artwork sub-tab, you'll realise this very painting is featured on this site too.

                Rockin'. Thanks.

Looks like Ted Nasmith only does limited edition prints though. :\

The Gondolin one is awesome. The Angband ones are cool too, but I imagine the gate of Angband to be at the end of a ravine - I suspect from something I read. I'll chase that up.

Well, I'm planning for wilderness to be a moving 3x3 grid of 'sublevels' which make up a standard level size - so each sublevel will be 66x22 grids. The player will always be in the central one; moving north into the middle top one (say) will make the bottom three disappear and force creation of three new top ones. So keeping within 66x22 would make things simpler, but given I don't know exactly how I'm going to make any of this work, I wouldn't worry too much about size. In fact having a full 198x66 landmark that gradually scrolled in would be pretty cool ... I guess just do what you feel like and we can see how it turns out.

Cool, that helps. I think I'll try Gondolin full scale, and the gates as a smaller project.

When I imagine the gates project I immediately lose focus on the gates and think about the three peaks of Thangorodrim overshadowing them.

Here is a description which pretty much matches what I have read; I'll keep looking for the original, though (which I think was somewhere in "History of Middle Earth").

That would be great, but if you're looking at patches to generation you should probably wait until there is actually some new generation code. I think everything's going to be thrown up in the air, and who knows how it will come down.

I must say, FAangband seems very interesting! Although I'm a relatively long-term player of Angband I'm actually quite new to variants, but nthis was one of my first choices and I'm quite pleased with it.

I'm finding it a little hard to survive though. I've not yet settled on a race and class combination, but I've tried melee and hybrid classes so far (was never comfortable spellcasting) and forget about dungeons - I can't even survive the wilderness yet!

                          Any tips?

Also, are there 'minor' quests (given by NPCs) in this variant as in others? Another variant I looked at is NPP. I like this one better, but quests are a nice touch.

Longbeards are a very good race to learn with, essentially being superdwarves. They come with rblind, good melee, good hp, and good melee/hybrid stats including a dex bonus iirc. I think there are a fair number of Longbeard assassin winners, if you're looking for a proven warrior with extras. They start in a safe wilderness area. It's a bit of a walk to the first dungeon, Amod Rudh, but it's not a hard one if you apply basic survival tenets like staying close to the edges, avoid getting surrounded by nasties, having teleport and teleport level handy, csw and ccw for confusion, etc...

Don't forget that FA has O based combat. If in doubt, examine your weapons for average damage output. Generally speaking, bigger damage dice weapons are better, much better.

That is very exciting. One of the things I like most about Tolkien is how expansive the wilderness is. Looking forward to that.

What do you mean expansive? Some hobbits walked from one end of it to the other in a few weeks!
