I started with V, like most people. Then I tried S, and loved the skill system, but it took me quite a while to get comfortable with the O-combat model after the simpler combat of V. Now I love O-combat and don't play variants with V-combat any more (which is a shame, because I enjoyed NPP a lot - but it means that FA is next on my list).
I tried Un briefly, during a break from S and O, and saw in minutes that it was a whole different ball game. Not just the combat, but the towns, columns, cupboards, fireplaces and all the rest. I put it mentally aside, to be enjoyed one day when I have the time and energy to learn a whole new way of playing (by which time it will have matured a lot in terms of feature stability and bugs, which will be all to the good).
I think what I'm trying to say is that Un is not really just a variant of Angband. It's like ToME - sufficiently different to be almost a whole different game. That's not a bad thing at all, it's great, but people who open it up expecting something that looks a little like V (which is what you get with NPP, O, S and even Z) are going to get a bit more than they bargained for.
One day I promise I will give it a good solid bash - a whole evening's play at least - and write you some proper feedback. (I've never said that to DarkGod.)
