Are there any variants that take identify to the extreme?

Beyond just the pseudo-id, are there any variants that assume the PC is a complete dunce? Like if you pick up a weapon it just says 'weapon' or even 'you picked up ... something'

I think it would be absolutely hilarious to help a character like that... maybe a simple farmer type... grow into a dungeon crawling master of all.

Unangband has a very sophisticated system of the *ID* portion of the game. You can learn that one of your items gives resistance to something, and it uses include/exclude logic to determine which one it is as you change your kit around. But I'm pretty sure that it still tells you what kind of weapon.

I should get around to playing Unangband one of these days.
    a chunk of Bronze {These look tastier than they are. !E}

        You pick up something.
You poke yourself in the eye.
You feel the sharp stick you are wielding is cursed.
You poke yourself in the (other) eye.
        You are blinded.
You feel you know more about the sharp stick you are wielding.

Maybe it would be less OT in "other games" but your post really reminded me of that game.
Ever tried Lost Pig (and place under ground)?

                  The gazebo draws near!
You attack the gazebo with your +5 longsword.
                  No effect!
                  The gazebo just sits there...
You attack the gazebo with your poison bolt crossbow.
                  No effect!
                  The gazebo just sits there...
You cast MAGICK MISSILE at the gazebo.
                  No effect!
                  The gazebo still sits there...
                  You flee in terror!
                  The gazebo still sits there...
                  And sits there...
                  And sits there...
You read the scroll labeled NOBIMUS UPSCOTI...
You are surrounded by a stasis field!
The tengu tries to teleport, but fails!

I recall reading this, or at least what I think is being referenced here, some time ago, in a actual print issue of Dragon or maybe Dungeon magazine, so I went out and found it on the web. Here's a link to it. Enjoy.

That was pretty funny. Sounds like most of my D&D nights. We blatantly broke the rules at all times.
