Erm ... Takkaria did this pretty comprehensively back in 3.0.8 or so. Not that we should re-examine it, but don't be surprised if there isn't a flood of responses, 'cos most of the easy ones have been done (and removed).

This isn't about removing options, it's about (potentially) changing some options from default off to default on (or vice versa).

I'd like to see randarts as a yes/no during character creation, rather then being in the option menu.

and I always turn on autocenter and turn off the audible bell. I *hate* the audible bell.

I agree w/ Buzzkill that randarts probably ought to be a prompt at birth, mostly because birth options are finicky about being reset b/w games - sometimes yes, sometimes no. I'd apply this to disconnected stairs, but people probably pick a preference and stick to it, rather than toggle it all the time the way they do randarts.

A lot of those options are controversial:
view_granite_lite (hate)
view_yellow_lite (don't care for; prefer hilite_player)
show_piles (don't like)
birth_ai_packs (prefer it)


birth_disconnected_stairs is probably not a good default setting for new players; don't know about birth_ai_learn.

use special colors for everything
disturb on viewable monster
change player color and hit point warning at >=50%
I always check these to be sure they are set to my liking

Here's my 2bits, although I kindof think the defaults should be based on whatever seems best for newbies.

use_old_target ON
hide_squelchable ON
squelch_worthless OFF (the game doesn't know what I consider worthless: a wand of heal monster damages undead and several 'worthless' potions can be used to rule out resistances on elvenkind armors)
easy_alter OFF (just cause I'm used to having it off)
center_player ON
all 'use special colors' options ON (I remember when I first turned them on to try out how it looks and I was impressed- the colors make the dungeon feel more like a dungeon.)
ai_packs OFF
ai_learn - I usually play with it off but plan to start playing with it on to see what it's like in game.
connected stairs ON (they aren't slides or chutes, though it might be cool to have those sometimes also.)

I like the idea of having the randarts option be set during character creation.

Yup. Limits field of view in the direction of motion, and it also makes me feel sick.

It kind of bugs me how the defaults are different for every variant and even change between versions. I know it's anal-retentive but I wish variants just stuck with Angband's defaults unless there was some reason specific to the variant to change them.
