With the Yeek cave behind him, my mage was now dreaming of greater things... oh, to ride atop a Great Hell Wyrm while flinging chaos magiks from his fingertips! With this goal in mind, I set about capturing a horse and learning to ride it.

And learning.

And learning some more.

I spent over an hour trying to gain some proficiency with this stupid beast, so I could at least stay mounted when taking small amounts of damage. Eventually, becoming very frustrated with my lack of progress, I went digging around in the source code and edit files... and it turns out that Mages have a maximum riding proficiency of zero

It sure would have been nice if the help files had mentioned that. I may change it locally just to suit my preferences... IMO, if a priest can get to Skilled then a mage should at least be able to obtain Beginner riding proficiency. My dreams are crushed!

Literally 60 seconds after posting all that I just noticed the proficiency screen:

I'm guess that the little '!' means that I'm already maxed out, and I could have saved myself a lot of trouble if I had known what that meant. Doh! Again!

You are correct as to what the ! means.
BTW, there are good Heng spoilers, which are mostly (some of the dungeon levels, in particular the Dragon's Lair, are wrong, but I've not found anything else wrong) correct for Entro at http://www.kmc.gr.jp/~henkma/heng-e/

Riding in Entro / Heng only with Cavalry or Beastmaster, really... Thou later Riding is very powerful (riding Kirin/GWOP/Fenghuan and the wing demons)

You need 4 elemental immunities or the One ring to ride Gwop, that imho isn't the best ride.

Mages have a max riding proficiency of zero? Funny, I don't recall Gandalf ever falling off his horse

Nicer yet is that riding gives you such a cool change in gameplay

Speed is based solely on the riding critter, so Wands and staves of
haste monster become useful, and wands of heal monster too, early.

Entro doesnt stops surprising me, today i've discovered, playing
Balrog Rogue (-200 virtue points towards) that it is still possible
to have friendly GOOD monsters if my virtues would normally point
to good before the -200 race mod, so i can have Fundin, Pip, Gandalf
and other friendly monsters even being an evil (less evil than most balrogs)
