Looking for a variant with Crafting

I'm looking for a good variant that involves crafting and weaponsmithing and the like. A friend of mine has gotten into Angband, and he's looking for such a beast to kind of mimic his "WoW" lifestyle.

SAngband looks interesting, but are there any other Angband variants that do the crafting type stuff?

UnAngband? In a way, at least. In many ways, in fact. E.g. applying runes/scrolls/spells to weapons/magical devices/etc., coating weapons and ammo, inscribing potions (broken in WIP5a, fixed in SVN).

However, I wouldn't count on Un being similar to WOW or actually to anything else. It's quite Unlike.

ToME's 2.x Alchemists can create powerful things.

Just wanted to plug Craftband here . It's in the very early stages, but should be moving forward soon.

Oh, you are going to work on Craftband again? Sweet

Other variants with crafting include Sangband and Portralis. Both of these also feature "skill" systems which might help your WoW-loving friend feel at home - and Portralis even does away with Angband's concept of "permadeath" - you can come back after you die, but you lose all your equipment and gold in inventory (but not in the home... and you can even put gold in the home!) which makes it a bit like Dragon Quest where you lose half your gold (but keep your equipment)... just remember in Portralis not to carry everything with you into the dungeon at once, unless you have memorized some spells or learned unarmed combat skill, because the monsters, just like the player, can get WAY overpowered
You read the scroll labeled NOBIMUS UPSCOTI...
You are surrounded by a stasis field!
The tengu tries to teleport, but fails!
