Some monsters can resist stunning but nothing is immune.. but undead, for instance, are very resilient, as are uniques.
Other classes can't stun with melee attacks? Is that changed from regular Zangband? I play a Chaos Warrior (awesome class btw) and I periodically get shield bashes that stun monsters.

Of course, my amazing Sonic Boom spell is a much more reliable way to do this.

My bad. Everyone can shield bash, and that sometimes stuns monsters. But it's nowhere near as reliable as monks' martial arts attacks.

        All hail the Warp Demon...

The Barbazu magically summons a demon from the Courts of Chaos!
You miss the Warp demon. <4x>
        The Warp demon hits you.
Your Light Crossbow (b) was disenchanted!
        The Warp demon hits you.
Can't you take a joke? You die.
        From my RIP character dump.

It's the first time I went from fully healed, 157HP and 30 mana, to dead in a single turn. Maybe someone can shed some light on exactly what happened to me. I mean, I can take a joke!

I didn't mind it so much when the demonoligist kept summoning "some really nasty things". Nasty things from the Courts of Chaos with proper names and long descriptions.Things I've never encountered before. It didn't even bother me that much when his summons started summoning also. What really got to me is that the whole time he was is some kind of a large pit surrounded by 100's Orcs/Trolls/and hounds, preventing me from getting a clear shot at him. Sure, they were all going to die eventually, but it takes a while for a sprite averaging 28 dam/round to clear a pit of that size. Worse yet, it was the 2nd level of a (clear 2 levels) quest, so I didn't want to recall and abandon it. I kept teleporting away and coming back for him. Hours passed, but I never did get a single hit on that damn demonologist.

Did I mention that earlier in the quest, when the vampire bats kept draining my XP. The Vampires themselves were no problem, just the bats. And then there was the Potion of Lose Memories, which I drained 1000's of XP. I never did earn it all back.

Yeah, warp demons are nasty. Generally if you run into a summoner and you can't kill him quickly your choices are hiding or dying. It's especially dangerous if it's summoning stuff you haven't seen before, there are monsters which can attack for 1500+ damage and are fast so once you get past floor 40 or so you have to be pretty cautious approaching new enemies.

I think "Can't you take a joke?" is just one of the randomly selected joke lines you get when you die.

Quests don't usually get marked as abandoned the first time you leave them. Usually you have to leave them a ton of times before you get the message "the stairways start crumbling behind you" which means the next time you leave the quest you'll fail it.

Would I have lost my progress? I had cleared the 1st level of a quest in which I had to clear 2 levels. Full dungeon levels, heavily inhabited. It probably took me 2 hours to clear the 1st level, while losing XP. I didn't want to have to do it again. I would have gladly abandoned the 2nd level and came back to a fresh new one if that's all that would have happened. There were probably at least a dozen demonologist summons, that I teleported away, roaming the level.

In all quests that have multiple levels, your progress is preserved. If you have cleared 1 level you'll never have to clear the first one again.

It's true it can take a really large number of tries to fail a quest for some quests, for others it just takes one or two tries. Basically, if the quest puts you in a dungeon that is consistent every time you visit it, you'll only get a few tries. If it's random every time you'll get loads.
