I've played Angband intermittently for years, using debug codes to make it easier. This year, for the first time, I finally decided to play an honest game (no debug or cheat codes, no save scumming), and used random artifacts just to make it more interesting. I've been working my way through, killing all the uniques for each level before proceeding deeper. After many, many hours, I finally got my level 50 paladin to DL 79, and got stuck in the Single Combat bug. Mind you, I saved *before* going into Single Combat, but it didn't matter.
It crashed in the middle of Single Combat, and apparently autosaved to the beginning of Single Combat. Now, that's the only save I have, and every time I try to end Single Combat it crashes. Nothing works: not killing my opponent, not letting myself die and cheating death, not Word of Recall. I even tried teleporting to a different level using a debug code. This is in version 4.2.0-dirty (whatever that means) on a MacBook. I know this bug has already been reported; I was just wondering if someone could help me save my character and keep playing it.
I don't mind losing the dungeon level I'm on; I just want my character back! Now that I know better, I can start making renamed backup copies before every Single Combat that won't get overwritten. But I don't want to lose the hours I've invested in this character (at great risk to my family relationships). Even using debug mode, it would be practically impossible to recreate this character and his equipment, due to the random artifacts. Somebody please help me! I wasn't able to attach the save file due to size limitations, but I can send it to anyone who wants to help me.
