How does the whole "1 turn per second" thing work with running? I couldn't imagine playing any *band with literally taking 1 step at a time.

            Isn't RL such a game?

Yes but RL has far too many Village Idiots, Singing Happy Drunks, Blubbering Idiots, Priests who hurt you, etc...

                  Server Problems

I just tried to log in, but if I try following the instructions and pressing escape I am taken to a screen where I enter my characters race, class etc. After that it says "entering game, hit any key". Hitting any key unfortunately results in a skull appearing and the window closing.
I took a look at the Mangband forum but there didn't seem to be anything about this error on there.

                  Can anyone help?

The skull is actually the greeting screen, as far as I know.

I think this happened to me when I tried to log in as a name that was already taken by another user. Try a different name perhaps, or on a different server? I'm no expert though.

Sorry to bump this, I always thought this quote was brilliant but today when reading it I realized it's not really true! We actually have player ghosts in MAngband, if you die, you become a ghost and you can get resurrected, either by another player or by going to the temple in town.

There's also an option to play a "Brave" character and that's basically a no-ghost character, like in Angband

I tried it, nice concept but there were only three (non-responsive) people there when I logged in. Also, frankly, roguelikes are one of the few games where my old computer doesn't suffer from lag so this was a bit of a step backwards IYKWIM.

Well, considering that to this date there's NEVER been anyone logged into Angband whenever I try it.. I think three aint that bad!

But, jokes aside, MAngband aint World of Warcraft any more than Angband is Half-Life 2 so the numbers of players will vary, some days we'll have parties of 4-8 players going down the dungeon together on our Ironman server, trying to reach the Dwarven Hall at 1000ft (and possibly the next town at 2000ft...) other days there may only be a handful of people dropping by to play a level or two every now and then.

Lag is not really all that big of a problem to be honest, mangband will go easy on your connection and we support basically all platforms (most anyway) currently. You don't run by default in MAngband so some people have mistaken that for lag over the years. Later on, when you start getting speed equipment the perceived speed will definitely not be a problem, up until the RNG provides that though, you will definitely be thankful that the game doesn't move any faster as it can be pretty tough

This sounds rather interesting. On a day when I have a decent signal from the local network, I'll give it a try.

                                *Throws two pennies on table*

I love Mangband (I play Xen and Eol there.) I have never won, but have reached clvl45 on a few occasions. You think hounds suck in Vanilla? HAHAHA! Try gravity hounds in real time. Azriel, Angel of Death? *shudder*

The main issue for me is one must share all the artifacts with others. This means that if a server has been running for a while, all the good players have the good arts either on their person, or locked in their houses. When a new, stable server comes up, though, its a blast.

Player killing also is a problem. New servers have (I think) PK disabled completely, which I don't like. Player-vs-player is hugely entertaining. It is, however, equally hugely annoying when a 14-year-old script-kid keeps killing your level 10 character over and over for no reason other than he thinks its a hoot. And when you die, you become a ghost, you drop all your crap and you lose half your experience, to be resurrected on the steps of store 4.

Teaming up with other players is quite a good time. A warrior and a mage can triumph magnificently when they've hammered out their tactics, as can other combinations of classes.

To fully enjoy Mangband, you must use the run movement (.). Without it, I find the game unplayable. Fortunately, it's located right on the numpad under your thumb; it becomes second nature to use it exclusively.

Macros, macros, macros. Use them, or die.

One cool thing is that since the game is semi-real-time, monsters will come to you. Well, I guess sometimes that's not such a cool thing...

That's me. If you play Angband, it certainly makes the learning curve of Mangband easier to manage. The game is definitely worth getting into. Remember, though: it's not Angand, so don't expect it to be.
