Your indispensable quality of life features/keymaps?

What are your indispensable tips that other players (old and new alike) might not know about or you have discovered through the years?

Or in other words, given a brand-new copy of Angband, what immediately goes into your pref files and auto-inscriptions?

Macro the same action to the same key. For example, for me F7 is light; zap a rod of illumination, activate the Phial or cast the spell, it always goes to F7. F12 is eating, eat food, read scroll of remove hunger or cast spell etc.

My keymaps mostly change based on what class I am playing, but usually my light area and detection stuff are mapped from f9-f12 with class appropriate spells (or filled in with rods.) All other useful spells (especially combat spells) are put on f1-f8. I use scrolls, wands, combat rods, and staves manually though, especially wands/staves since I've not paid attention to charges or use failures before and ended up moving when I didn't mean to and wasting a turn (usually taking fire.) Doing it manually keeps me in the habit of reading the result more often.

One quality of life keymap that I use for every class is making it so that j brings up the list of objects on the ground so I don't have to use i and - all the time.

I only map keys if I play something that has an essentially important ranged attack at the start.

          maa*t - Mage and Necromancer
f[enter]*t - Ranger or anything with an early launcher
mbb*t - Priest (this throughout the game)

Keys to map them into are '-' or any of the scandinavian letters.

Doesn't the built in h command already do this?

              Heh, I don't know. Or didn't know..

Creating keymaps is basically coding to me already. I'm just crap-ass hopeless with computers. Well, with anything that isn't roguelikes

mage F1 MM (mana storm in endgame), F2 frost bolt, F3 fire bolt, F4 acid bolt, F5 TO, F8 MBan
priest F1 Orb, F2 TO, F3 sense surroundings / clairvoyance
ranger just F1 MM, maybe F2 TO later on
rogue F1 TO, F2 detect objects

i used to have a ton more but i cut down.

Inscriptions, keymaps, and a whole HOST of changes made by Takkaria and Nick over the past four years, Lat/Long for monsters (my idea ), "~" menus,... dozens of great user interface changes.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”
