Well I kept that Amulet of Sustenance at home in case I wanted it... but maybe I just quaff the Lifes.

The one thing I'm not seeing is a whole bunch of potions of speed. Get them. Me personally I'd swap in trickery amulet because having str/dex/con sustained on a warrior is minimum drama. Other then that you look good to go. Just keep in mind Morgoth will drain non-rod devices (don't melee him with wands/staves) & that you constantly want to reduce the fight to you & him (banish, TO etc.)

Yes. Last few trips to the dungeon have been stingy with Speed potions and I used some on those last big uniques. OK I'll try to find some more.

I would replace one speed ring with damage and buff haste, but if you stick to 30 base speed anyway you dont really need any speed potions.

            Anyway, good luck!

If you have 30 base speed and don't have speed potions, you can still use the staff and carry recharge scrolls for a speed advantage. Just make sure you empty the staff before fighting Morgy in melee.

Following the advice above I cleared a couple of levels hoping for potions of speed. I did take out Measse, Lungorthin, Wiruin and Vecna, I found an un-IDed ring but it was Barahir, and an un-IDed amulet which was Ingwe. I left them on the floor (sorry Ingwe!). A great ice wyrm at 4950' finally dropped a Rod of Speed, but I only scraped together three potions of Speed. Never found the greater rings of power, nor did I ever see PDSM, Feanor, Fingolfin, Ringil or Cubragol.

First attempt to find Morgoth I read a scroll of Destruction to prepare an area and then discovered he wasn't coming because he was stuck in a vault which I didn't fancy fighting at all. Tried again on a new level and managed to make my way over to the corner of the map and destruct an area for him. The fight felt very tough and definitely not anti-climactic as some other tough uniques had been. His first * took ages to go down (maybe I should have put some damage items on!) and he kept summoning Ds and undead. I was panicking because I wasn't sure how much I needed to conserve my scrolls (10 Banishment and 5 Mass Banishment), but I didn't want to take the risk of spending a turn with a big breather and Morgoth both in line of sight; especially since his first summon included a great wyrm of law and shards is my only resistance hole. So I used Banishment on D, Mass Banishment when it all got a bit mad, and then teleported him away. After that first encounter I got a bit smarter, worked out when I could phase door to break LoS and pick monsters off. Greater Balrogs were annoying for their tendency to stand on rock and not be teleportable. The first time he summoned uniques he got smeagol, mughash and the big Q, but I destructed that to get rid of the Q. He brought smeagol and mughash back but the Q never showed up again. The fight seemed to go in phases with him just facing me toe-to-toe for two or three stars, and then going mad with summons and spells for a bit. I mostly managed to stay at +41 or +42 using the rod of speed, I think I quaffed one potion but I did fight for a while at +32. Overall I think I used about 15 potions of CCW, 10 of Healing, 5 of *Healing*, 4 of Life, 4 scrolls of Banishment, 2 of Mass Banishment and 5 of *Destruction*. I used both of my rods of restoration and two of my rods of healing but at 30% fail I wasn't going to risk that with anything in LoS.

So after 25 years playing this game, I finally get that ***WINNER*** banner on the left of my screen. Thanks for the help and encouragement!

Next to try as a character who can't just face 99% of the monsters in the game toe-to-toe in an antisummoning corridor...

Great job. Congratulations. I've won before but never with a melee character.

Awesome, congrats! I remember my first victory was with a priest. It was hella intense, like this one sounds.

                          A few notes:

Balrogs dont phase therough walls they tunnel, so they are never standing in wallsx but rather where a wall once was. So you can TO them as soon as they enter LOS.

My preferred approach for dealing with Morgoths summons is to phase door away, teleport Morgoth away and then Destruct the area. Morgoth is faster than all his monions, so he will almost always reach you first, and a I like destruct because I can get rid of enemies without thwm enter line of sight.

Next you should try Paladin. Instead of an anti-summoning corridor, you instead trap the unique in a small room with you where they cant summon (even Morgoth!) for a fight to the death.

Thougj thats the only melee character who isnt as dependent on anti-summoning corridors. I actually expect most characters rely on them, when they bother to fight uniques at all. Maybe mage doesnt?

As a mage, I sometimes use anti-summoning corridors but usually just fight them. If the summoning gets too intense I rely on Banishment and Mass Banishment to get rid of the minions. I almost never use Destruction.

Can’t use banishment or mass banishment to kill a horde of Vs or Ds for the loot though! Maybe that’s just something mages don’t do?

Yeah but why are you avoiding summons if you want to kill them all for xp & loot?

More seriously, no class needs to use anti-summoning corridors, I don't use them & I know others who don't either. Personal opinion is that it's more fun to play without them, though whether you do or don't is entirely up to you.
