I suspect the change was about 3.3 or 3.4 - there were changes made to item distribution then driven by taking stats on what items were generated over the course of a game. There have actually been pretty much no item distribution changes as such since 3.5, although changing things like dungeon generation and the monster list have an effect.

Out of about 150 or so wins, I think I've found the One Ring about 5 times. Once was after killing Sauron, so not all that useful. I think I've only actually USED it twice--the one I just mentioned and one where it dropped (IIRC) in the early late game, so I got to use it for a fair bit of time.

I've never found it, then again I've only been playing since about 2014, and have only won 2 or 3 times, I get far down quite often though...
So not really too surprising that I've never found it

On like level sixty-something in a minor vault.

also TOR is super-easy to identify once you !Enlight because it's the only artifact in a randart set to always look the same - a plain gold ring.

Get to DL98 with a mage or priest
                  !Enlight
look for potions of !Enlight and for TOR
Banish away everything standing in between you and those
                  repeat until happy

all my wins are like 160k turns+.

I should have named him "Isildur"

Ironically my first time finding TOR and it quite literally killed me. Entered a level, detect monsters... Ainu Pit right beside me including those wall-walkers... aggravated by the Ring...

So very sad... and so very true to form.

If it really was a pit, The One had no effect. Pit monsters are always awake. And you are guaranteed one move before them in any case.

                            Wow.
Also, shouldn't the ring grant Hold Life as well as drain experience? I mean, it did increase lifespan of its users.

This is almost certainly too complicated, but what it should do is rather than making you resistant to experience drain, it should spread it out. Like say you get hit for 1000xp drain. Rather than resisting it, you instead take 100 xp in damage. And then another 100xp later, especially if you're about to level up and so on until youve taken all 1000.

After all, the One Ring really just stretches your life force thin, rather than protecting it.

Broke my One Ring cherry just this month on my ranger. I went ahead and wore it since I had found Doomwreaker as well. Why not, I thought. He's hovering around dl99 at the moment.
