    4.1.3 -> 4.2

    Here's my situation, and I hope someone can help. I'm running Mac OSX Catalina, for the record.

    My son has been playing 4.1.3. I saw that 4.2 had been released, so I installed it, leaving 4.1.3 intact. He goes and loads up 4.2 and tries to open his character and the game just quits. (I take it save files don't transfer over?) I think okay, no big deal, we still have 4.1.3 there. We open it but it immediately quits. I say, okay, let's delete both of them (after making a backup of his save file) and I'll reinstall 4.1.3. Same behavior: it immediately quits.

    Any suggestions for how to let him continue playing his character?

    You're right that savefiles from 4.1 can't be loaded by 4.2. I suspect this may be an issue with the monster lore file, but I can't be sure. Can you post the savefile (and randart file if he's playing with randarts)?

      I just tried attaching it to this post and I'm getting an error message when I click "Upload":
      The webpage at http://angband.oook.cz/forum/newatta...anageattach&p= might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
      Is there another way to do it?

        upload the file to some online repository, like googledocs or whatever you use, and post a link.

The simplest thing will just be to delete this - you will have lost your monster memory, but everything will now work.

            If you want to try and recover your monster memory, let me know and I'll see what's possible. It is also possible to get full monster memory by copying your monster.txt file to where lore.txt was and renaming it to lore.txt.

              Thank you! This worked. My son is super excited to be able to continue. (Finding Kelek's on DL10 made him very enthusiastic about this character.)

                Kelek's doesn't exist in 4.2 - not sure how that will carry over. Mages now have 3 x town books and 2 x dungeon books - all with different names.

                  Yes, this will have to be a 4.1 character.
