    Moving diagonally, is it possible?

I was taking a look at the screenshots just cause, and noticed a few where someine was in a vault but the o ly way they could have gotten there was to move diagonally like the monsters do.

How does one do this? I wonder what I've missed when I give up on a vault because I can't access the rest, and the walls give a "permanent" message when ai try to dig. I play version 3.2.0.

Moving diagonally is a key part of all Angband-likes and does not require anything particularly special; with the original keyset, use the numpad keys 1, 3, 7, 9; with the roguelike keyset, use b, n, y and u.

People with no numpads are generally advised to use the roguelike keyset precisely so they can move diagonally, though it's also possible to just use the normal number keys 1, 3, 7 and 9. I think using macros to allow diagonal movement by pressing two arrow keys at once is also an option, though not many people do that. Ingwe would know.
The Complainer worries about the lack of activity here these days.

I use 1,3,7,9 on my laptop. It helps to place three fingers on 123 and 789 until you get used to it. I just noticed yesterday that Angband.live has a tablet ui that also could help. You can go back and forth easily with a mouse.

You can also use Home, Page Up, End, and Page Down for diagonal movement (except in GCU...).

no, moving diagonally is forbidden by the old books, your soul will burn in hell just for mentioning it. what is next ? not paying taxes? hitting your wife? teaching your daughter how to code?

Wait, how do you move non-diagonally then? Do you use the arrow keys with your third hand? Or do you use the 123456789 keys above the letters, and you train yourself to associate them to the correct directions even if they are not in the same shape?

(Anyway, proud roguelike keyset user here. I have already trained myself to associate j/k with up/down even if they are not in the correct shape...)

I have numbers 1 and 6 not functioning in my laptop numpad. Still use the numpad though. I just move to SW and E with main keyboard number keys.

When I have left middle finger on 2, I use left index to press 3 and 4.

You could always move diagonally. - even without numberic keypads there was a virtual layout for moving the 8 directions on the keyboard. It's been a long time so I forget the exact keys, but it was something like iop jkl nm,

And I just looked it up:

hjkl for the four standard directions and "yu" and "bn" for diagonals.

It's been a while since I played without a keyboard

Yes, that's the roguelike keyset (vi-style keys), if that's what you had in mind. You have to activate it explicitly in the options though, because these keys are already used for other commands in the standard keyset.

You mean without a numeric keypad I guess?

                            Yes - that's absolutely what I mean.

If you're old enough to have used a 10-key adding machine then the keypad is almost automatic. Middle finger on the 5, then it's a short movement to hit any of the directions. The little raised bump on the 5 is there so you can find it easily.
