    A few q's

So why was the s for search function discarded for spin <whee> and what does spinning do for you?

And why are there different spell letters for paladins vs priests in the same book?

I've been getting some dwarven priestesses killed - mostly due to bad habits developed by playing my paladin

Manual searching has been removed because:
    • The character now has one chance (depending on perception) to see a trap, when they first see that grid
    • Secret doors are always found when the character stands next to them.

Mages still get to detect traps and doors, too.

The 's' command now steals from monsters, but only if you are a rogue; otherwise you get the 'spin around' message.

Because the spell lists of priests and paladins are disconnected (although with considerable crossover). And I always found the whole illegible spell thing a bit of an annoyance

dude, nobody used s to search, but rather to recover HP. Frankly not having a command for recovering HP is a ridiculous oversight that must be killing new players's interest left and right.

(shift + R) + (shift + &) + Enter is not a good way to recover HP if you are a warrior. And most new players do not know how to keymap.

it's too many keys. for such a basic necessity, and in fact, i keybind s to rest, but if we are to introduce the game to new people, a key to rest should be reinstated. And ... s would do just fine.
(also, i just found boots of speed +8 on DL11 with my halftroll mage )

No I meant 5 as in the actual rest key (rather then R5) which is 1 key, I mean yeah sometimes 1 key is too many but hey

oh, nothing wrong with that. 5 is fine. but 5 is 1 turn rest. the original "s" was longer, not as long as "rest until recovered" of R&[enter] but long enough that tapping it a couple times would put you back to full.

I just go 'Shift+R, Enter' to rest until fully healed. It automatically puts the & for me. Never setup a keymap for this as Shift+R isn't that hard to press IMO. Does it not work like this for others?
I generally use 'Shift+R, {10,15,20}, Enter' to rest up to a given amount of turns though. The issue I've had with resting until fully healed is that you don't get woken up if a monster arrives from outside LOS.
This has killed me at least twice, for example there might be an Umber Hulk digging and appearing right next to me. Without rConf or _Tele this will mean death for a weak char, possibly !Speed can break the confusion lock. There are other cases where a summoner or breather gets LOS but you don't so you get the well-known 'It breathes. You die.' So I don't even want a single key to rest until fully healed, because I think using it is bad practice and mistakingly pressing it could mean unavoidable death. I'd rather rest a few times and check that nothing dangerous has awoken nearby every dozen turns or so. Sure it is a very small chance to die from resting but it is clearly non-zero.

I still remember (shift + S) for searching mode and running along the walls of rooms to try and find possible hidden doors - it had the added bonus of restoring hit points and mana.

It's possible it's from my ancient Moria lore - but it could be old Angband as well.

It used to be a thing, yeah. The removal of searching is relatively recent (last 1-2 years I think), as part of a general overhaul of traps and hidden stuff.

I also use shift-R enter routinely. It has the disadvantage that if I fat-finger and do not press the shift, it reads the first scroll in my inventory (usually a ?phase door), which might put me in an awkward situation. I never lost a char to that, though. (You may argue that if one routinely mistypes, maybe Angband is not the best game for them; I understand that.)

I mapped the <TAB> key to rest for 5 turns, that way I rest a bit, but not overmuch, since I would rather regain the hitpoints walking around. If needed, I'll press the Tab key a 2 or 3 times. Usually where nothing can sneak up on me. If something does come along, the rest is automatically interrupted.

But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”
