      I should add for posterity that stats, gold and xp are easily altered with the debug commands. Artifacts are also easy to restore. Consumables are fairly easy. I'm having a very hard time with non-artifact equipment, though.

        Things like object memory are not at all listed in the dump, so that's tough. I don't know how to easily restore turn count other than resting in town.

          Experiment continuing, going pretty well I'd say...

          One baffling issue: Old toon had both Disarm scores reported 8% lower than new toon. Same equipment as far as I can tell. Same everything! Why is new toon better at disarming?

            Also for posterity: Hex editors seem to work fine. Don't try to edit anything with a text or code editor.

              More tips:

              Don't edit XP until after you slay the uniques you want to slay (I couldn't find a way to go *down* in Max XP other than hex editing)

              Don't roll for HP until near the end because it's time consuming and easy to accidentally ruin that work (I couldn't find a way to alter Max HP other than rolling for it)

                Summon Named Monster does a "fuzzy" search, so you can summon someone like Sméagol by typing "agol". Sometimes you'll get more monsters than you expected this way.

                It can be convenient to edit objects on the floor, but this caused a lot of crashes for me.

                If an item is not properly IDing after editing, drop it and pick it up again

                Save often. Back up that save from time to time.

                  I used diff to identify all the differences. Very few. Notable:
                  • I couldn't get the Max XP to go down. Set Cur XP to the right number.
                  • New character has 8% higher disarm (weird)

                  • Resting turns are off the chart, but total turns is accurate
                  • Debug-created Loth bow doesn't have Slow Digestion (weird)
                  • Player history (when Uniques are killed, etc) is obviously fabricated

                    The Verdict

                    Other than the above issues, I'd call it a complete success! Took about 4 hours with learning curve. Whether I'd be a happier person having played Angband for 4 hours is debatable, but I am surely wiser.

                      See ui-player.c line 889/890 (in 4.2.0):

                      	panel_line(p, colour_table[skill / 10], "Disarm - phys.", "%d%%", skill);
                      looks like, unlike everything else, the values displayed for these two skills (disarm phys and magic devices) depend on the depth you're on when you check them - so if you took the dump on your original character at level 41 your skill would be 41/5 = 8 percent less vs in town.

                        Seems to me shouldn't be too hard to fix turns resting and such if you've already been hex editing the save file - just take the number, convert to hex, byte swap it, and look for those four bytes. Or you can dig through the 'load.c' code and set a break point where the value is loaded from the save file and just change it on the fly, then save again.

                            Agreed. Just didn't seem worth it. I tried to hex edit Max Exp - that seemed worthwhile - but I couldn't figure it out. I don't remember anything that I actually successfully hex edited in the end. I successfully hex edited AU at one point, just to prove I could, but the debug commands already do that very well.
