    Limitless inventory?

I find proper inventory management (carrying + home) to be a large part of a winning character. I find myself wishing for more (or unlimited) carrying space so that I could carry more effective items for particular situations. With the inventory system as it stands your final set of winning equipment is likely to be very similar from game to game. I think it would be interesting to have a bag large enough so that I could use a Scythe of *SLAY ANIMAL* when the situation called for it rather than using my more generically applicable weapon so I can conserve inventory slots for niche resists or !CCW or Wands of Teleport Other

If I remember correctly (it's been 20 years) a lot of inventory decisions were made partly based on keeping the game so it could fit on one floppy...

Are there any variants that handle inventory differently? Anyone else feel the same?

The limit was based on the dimensions of the 80x24 terminals that moria ran on. There were 22 lines for inventory items.

Poschengband and its successors have an inventory limit of 26, which is based on the number of letters in the alphabet.

Interesting. I had forgotten about fixed terminal window sizes. I started on moria in xterm windows on some version of unix in the mid 90s. Pretty sure the windows themselves could be resized but if my memory is correct, the game would not scale. I remember being really excited when Angband finally scaled when you resized a window (windows version)

In any case, I still want unlimited inventory as an option so I can carry as many dumb wands, weapons, and scrolls as my heart desires. I don't think it would change the endgame much but it would provide more flexibility in the middle game when your kit is constantly shifting.

        In lib/gamedata/constants.txt

        Code:
        # Max number of pack slots for carrying inventory
        carry-cap:pack-size:23
Note I haven't tried changing this, but most of these settings just work if you edit them.

Mmmm..., I might try pack size 30 and to offset the the easierness of increasing pack size I think I'll squelch wands of TO and/or ?Runes of Protection. Might be a fun Challenge mode for Ironman.

I think this was tried a bit to make the home much bigger, and may have run into alphabet size problems.

I haven't compiled anything in ~15 years. Maybe I'll have to do some poking around in the source and see how hard it would be to change. I really like Vanilla but I want to enable packrat mode

The most opposite end of the spectrum variant I can think of is Unangband, where you gain access to magic bags that let you stuff tons of potions and scrolls and other items into, based on their base type. If you scan this dude's inventory, you'll see he is actually carrying a metric ton of junk... there's also multiple homes in Unangband for tons of storage. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=11417

Another thing that comes to mind is ToME's rod of town portal... rod of, home summoning (something like that)? I seem to recall it's a late game item, where you can be anywhere in the game, and zap the rod, and have access to your home inventory. Pretty sure it was the only way for Void runners (ToME's bonus end-game) to access their home and vital swap equipment since once they enter the Void, you can't go back. That's kind of like having access to tons of extra equipment/items.
