    Q: randarts and torches

In the V standart set, the magical lights are the Phial, the star of elendil and the arkenstone. All these have their own, unique icon.

In the randart sets, although these are available (though i must admit i've never seen a single star in ANY game, not even in the spoilers) most of the randart lights will be torches or lanterns, with phials coming in third and arkenstones a distant fourth.

    Now, my question:

"if i find a NORMAL lantern earlier on, and i set the game to squelch torches .."

which is pretty standard behaviour, however, i've realized that i would now not see (although they are still generated) any Torch artifact, unless (i assume) i walk on it while it is squelched. Or possible *even* when i walk on it if squelched.

In short, the squelch is ... squelching artifacts?

Good point, this behaviour should probably be reworked. Also, we call it ignore now

Also: am i the only one who finds torch artifacts a ludicrous notion? Magic lanterns is an old and storied trope. But what self-respecting dark-elf smith would want to make a torch out of legend? Might as well be a birthday candle

        BTW:
While squelch is broken in a harmful way, so is easy know in a beneficial way. So you can identify ego/artifact lights from far away as a rogue, or with !Enlightenment. A normal lantern will always show (7500 turns of light.) A special lantern appears as "a lantern."

You can never ignore artifacts. So if you have torches ignored and there's an artifact torch generated, you'll still see it.

last 2 wins = 0 artifact light source generated,,

how about a guarantee of one of each kind~ i did however find artifact star in like 3,3

I did say this before, i would like randart games to still forcibly generate 1 phial, 1 star and 1 arkenstone. Im not happy with not having these tiered items guaranteed in every game. (phial A: light, star A: map, Arkenstone: !Enlight)

For what it's worth, I 100% understand what you're saying, but I also, on a purely subjective basis, disagree with it. For me, it's more important that the randarts be unpredictable than it is that I get access to the quality-of-life improvements that the phial/star/arkenstone series provides, or that my randart light sources all be of "special" types instead of being torches/lanterns.

This is one of those things that feels like it should be an option, except that its effects are so small that it doesn't seem worth supporting it at the option level. :\

I think that having phial / arkenstone / star activate for the same thing every game would limit a neccessary type of randomness with random artifacts, but I think it would be nice to have them still be forced to generate. Artifact torches seem silly to me.

Or Maybe just an auto-bump in item type? artifact Torches -> lanterns, lanterns->phial, phial->ark, ark+star->star

I think I would like a limit of 1 of any given object type for the light artifacts.
I don't mind having the types chosen from the 5 currently available, although it does weaken them on average.

What I feel really needs tweaking though is the generated max depth though. I think it should be relative to the artifact type, rather than the absolute strength.
Currently most lights end up with a low enough max depth that they are unlikely to be found.
