4.1.2 what is the max number of saves allowed?

So im playing 4.1.2 and i got to DL98 with my half orc warrior, and decided to get a break, just so i dont do something STUPID like fight Sauron without any *healing*. (true life story)

And i started a kobold mage that was surprisingly successful, and guess what, i got to DL98.

So i took another break and started a troll priest (lol) and he's doing well, so just out of fancy i also made a half-orc rogue and a dunedain ranger.

Then i decided to go back to my warrior and BAM! save file is broken; "the such and such Artifact cannot be found".

This is my only Angband folder atm, so ..

is there a maximum number of saves i can store concurrently before this happens? I tried also my troll but he's broken as well.

(i deleted ALL the saves in a fit of rage, so no point asking for that)

There is no maximum number of saves. The message you got probably means there was something wrong with the randart file - but now the saves have been deleted, we will never know what...

The way it is supposed to work is that when you start a character with randarts, a randart file is generated, called randart.txt, in your lib/user folder. When you close the game, that file is written (with a special name based on the randart seed) to your lib/user/archive folder. Then when you open the game again, and load a character which uses randarts, the game will select the correct randart file from your lib/user/archive folder, and copy it to randart.txt in lib/user, and so on.

The way it can get messed up is if you already have a randart.txt file in lib/user, in which case it will try and use that. So my guess is somehow that happened; possibly if you had the game already open and tried to open it again, or if it crashed, or if the game got closed in some other way (like a system crash or reboot) which left a randart.txt file behind. So maybe one of those things happened.

I should probably try to make it more robust against this sort of problem.

It is also possible to start multiple instances of the game and in this case the above is also a problem.
Is the file needed also while playing? Isn't everything loaded into memory at startup/open character?

Ha, thank you! Of course the thing to do is re-archive it immediately. This should fix the problem
