I don't know, it's probably just me, but it seems like the latest version of Angband is a lot harder than I remember it being in the past. Like even with wizard mode on (yes, I'm lame), I'm dying or coming close to death far too frequently in the early game (pre-level 5).

However I did notice than on the two I sent you, that they had a fairly hard time starting off as well. It all could be tied to persistent level play.
I'll try building one with that option off, see if it makes it a bit easier, and report back.Comment

Strength Stat has been nerfed? over version changes?
Seems like the strength stat is what's causing the problem. In the past I usually look for a minimum of a STR of 15-16 with a CON of 13 or better and try to get a high DEX of about the 14 as well.... but it seems like that's insufficient now?Comment

If you press 'C' (shift + c), you see the character screen (where you can switch between the statistics page and the resistances details).
There you can create a character dump with 'f' if I remember correctly (it asks for the path where the dump file should be saved).
Then in this web page you see a 'Ladder' button at the top - there you can upload dumps at the 'Submit your character!' section by selecting the file you just saved.Comment

I was just basically noting that the game seemed harder to start than I remember, even with wizard mode on. But I'm guessing that's because they've changed how the power for stats work in the newer versions over the years/decades.
I'm not having that much trouble with 18+ STR Half-Troll Priest right now. (Of course persistent levels is also off.)
So, I'm guessing that 15-16 STR is no longer a sufficient starting STR stat for characters such as Dunadan Rangers (16), Half-Orc Mages (15), and High-Elf Priests (15).Comment

What the stats do has been remarkably unchanged for a really long time. How long ago are we talking?takkaria whispers something about options. -more-Comment

Creating a character dump and uploading it would let everyone see your character so they can try to figure out why everything is seeming harder for you.
The ladder is the section of the site where you can upload character dumps - I think it's called the ladder because it was designed for uploading dumps for competitions, but it's perfectly okay to upload them for other reasons, like getting advice.
"The top" refers to the top of this very page - if you scroll all the way up, you will see several tabs right under the angband.oook.cz logo - About, Variants, Ladder, Forum, Competitions, Comic, Screenshots, Funnies, and Links.I'm trying to think of an analogy, and the best I can come up with is Angband is like fishing for sharks, and Sil is like hunting a bear with a pocket knife and a pair of chopsticks. It's not great. -NickComment

I concur with the others that if you upload your character info to the 'ladder' part of the website it will make helping you much easier. Uploading to the ladder means we can see everything about your character, such as its starting stats.
Here is an example of a character sheet that has been uploaded to the ladder. It's called a 'character dump': http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=22380
You can see all the character's stats on that character sheet I linked to. If you need more help uploading your character to the ladder just let us know.

Are we talking about the same version of the game? I'm running Angband 4.1.3 vanilla here. I've not seen any blood falcons yet even on my now lvl 22 & 23 characters. But yeah, centipedes and such should not be that big of a deal with decent STR DEX and CON stats.... but I found that they were for my first couple tries (But maybe that was just bad luck on damage rolls? -shrug-). But now I got a Half-Troll Priest with 18+ STR stat, I'm doing just fine (also persistent levels is off).Comment

When you start your character did you choose 'point-based' or 'standard roller'?

This ladder stuff is still confusing me. Like why not just make a zip file, or just screenshot my stats? That seems a lot easier and more efficient than whatever dumpfile thing you're asking.
Anyway, this is not a bug report anyway, just an observation on personal gameplay, which is likely due to my own errors, rather than the game's.Comment

Because it is far easier to read it as a text file online. I would never bother to download a zip file of someone's character just to read it. And cut-and paste characters are hard to read. Try the ladder before you make (ignorant) comments about it. (Ignorant, because you haven't tried it!)Comment
