Why is gaining spells randomized for priests? If it is about game balance, I don't see how it does so. Please explain this to me, because personally I find it very annoying that I can't choose what spells I can learn when they are available to me.

Because that is how D&D did it when angband (or Moria) was first written.

Whereas other spells for other classes are learned, so you get to choose.👍 1Comment

It is pretty annoying in the early game, but mostly a non-issue outside of that, as you tend to have more spell slots free to learn spells with than there are spells to learn in the books you have. The most critical spell is Orb of Draining, and you can game that by saving up enough unlearned spells (by not using the G command) that you can learn every accessible spell in the third book as soon as Orb unlocks.
Given that it is both annoying and a non-issue if you learn the trick, I wouldn't be opposed to letting priests pick their spells.Comment
