Retreat from Morgoth or fight on?

I was trying to take the diving fast strategy as far as I could this time around, which seemed to work pretty well, except that I was only CL 38 when I got to 4900' and had killed relatively few of the uniques.

I'm in the final fight but might have to flee. My wands of annihilation are mostly getting regenerated away when I TO Morgoth, I think. I've used more than half of my !heal and 2 of 13 !*heal* and I've only got him down 1 star. This character does more damage, has higher speed, AC, etc. than my winner (although slightly fewer HP).

Should I back off and kill uniques for a while? Or does it still seem winnable? http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=21536

You're not doing any damage because you carry wands and staves and Morgoth simply heals from draining your charges over and over. Drops all your devices and try again. Don't forget to use phase door often to banish and heal. Should be enough with a weapon dealing over 400 per round.

I'm not 100% sure if you're doing any melee fighting against M. I kind of assume you do not as you have that many drainables in your pack. At least I never carry wands or staves if I do melee him even though I do not have the slightest idea how much he gets healed from the drains.

But, if no melee then maybe switch to Thorin and Til-i-arc for more HP, INT and slightly more speed?

I was trying to fight exclusively with the wands of annihilation, but if 400 dam/turn is enough, maybe I'll drain the charges and switch to melee. I'm more concerned about him regenerating as he walks back to the middle of the map after I TO him to get rid of his summons. I don't have much *banishment*, so I have to either destruct, banish each species, TO, or actually kill the summons.

If you're fighting with wands, you phase door as soon as Morgoth gets into melee range. Don't switch to melee until you've already spent every charge that you have. Or else drop the wands and do the whole fight in melee.

A wizard would do the whole fight using the wands, never allowing Morgoth into melee range at all, and greater recharging whenever charges run out. But for a non-gnome rogue, using melee is probably more practical.
