    Not remotely as much as many contemporary roguelikes are. Sure, you'll learn unpleasant surprises from a few monsters, but the lessons mostly boil down to:

    * The more hitpoints, the better
    * Have Free Action and See Invisible
    * Basic resists are important
    * If you don't know what a monster does, assume it can kill you

    I'm pretty sure that a newbie player that internalized those lessons would know enough to avoid the vast majority of "learning the hard way" that the game would otherwise have. Sure, they'd still stumble into traps, waste a few items on use-ID, have a mis-optimized kit, and so on, but those lessons aren't nearly so harsh.
