@Oraticus: I strongly disagree. My favorite games are those in which I go from desperately underpowered (in HP and speed) for a given depth to near endgame strength in a single greater vault. "Balanced growth" is dangerously close to "grinding", IMO. That said, I have no problem with cutting the ridiculous frequency of lesser vaults deep in the dungeon. But vaults like "Jigsaw" and "Diagonal" (not to mention the various checkerboard variations) are just huge rewards for an underpowered character. It's way more fun than gleaning critical stuff room by room.
Too many vaults!

Maybe I'm just not jaded enough to the boredom of slowly clearing/TOing a big vault and ending up super powered, but those are to me by far the most fun parts of the game, and I doubt I'm alone in feeling that way.Comment

If "balanced" growth is feeling like "grinding", then it's not what I'd consider balanced. Like @Derakon said, breaking it out into appreciable but not game breaking chunks matters. Honestly, I think a Greater Vault should give you a sizeable boost, but a few upgrades with an awesome item or two to spurn you on to your next trove of riches. Using the word "steady" in my first post was probably not the best choice… I'm not looking for a linear growth of power myself. :P
Then again, I guess playstyles can differ wildly. I like the idea that I could find something awesome at D20 relative to my character power just as I could likely find something relatively awesome at D80 and that I see spikes of growth as I go, as opposed to always playing to that "one critical moment".Comment

i've found about 10 smaller vaults, the two biggest ones where those that have two separate sections, top and bottom, with a single wall dividing them. And i've just found one of the circle ones, with a cross-shaped corridor in the middle and 4 side sections. no GV yet. DL97.
aaaand just as i said that i found two GV in a row. used 4 MBan out of 5. one was the big empty one without walls, the other is the long line of 1-block rooms. DL98.Last edited by Sky; October 11, 2017, 18:15."i can take this dracolich"Comment

@sky- the ones with two separate arcs are technically greater vaults, though I agree they aren't all that great. But it's at DL 90 where vaults just start showing up everywhere. In my current game I ran into 5 greater vaults between do 90 and 98, along with any number of lesser vaults. It's more than average, sure. But not all that much more.Comment

I've been looking into this issue, and have formed the following opinions:- The number of greter vaults is probably OK
- There are too many medium and lesser vaults - I htink it's the modified dungeon profile causing this rather than the classic
So my intended fix for now is to increase the rarity of unusual rooms in the modified profile:Code:## Modified name:modified params:1:50:300:2 tunnel:10:30:15:25:50 streamer:5:2:3:90:2:40 cutoff:200
Code:## Modified name:modified params:1:50:250:2 tunnel:10:30:15:25:50 streamer:5:2:3:90:2:40 cutoff:200
This seemed on a quick inspection to be doing the job.
I would encourage people to play with the numbers in dungeon_profile.txt, especially the unusual parameter I've already tweaked, and the individual room cutoffs within profiles. If someone gives me good reason to alter the standard numbers, I'm happy to look at that. One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
