are there any other variants out there with graphics / tiles? i'm looking to move from V for a while but really cannot cope with the ASCII gameplay.

FAangband has graphics (and also many wilderness levels). -

Well, the better question is still 'which variants don't have graphics' rather than 'which variants have graphics' which is what I was trying to get across.Comment

You don't "learn" spells in TOME2 like in other variants, if you have the book and enough skill in that school you can cast the spells.Comment
