Mim, Betrayer of Turin

Hello

On my past Angband games i have already encountered this unique and his pals , and learned the hard way that he was a case of "better teleport away than be sorry for your equipment" .

Now with the latest Angband release i have decided to have a new run, i created a dwarf warrior and in my expeditions i ran into one of Mim's son that i managed to destroy, Khîm, thanks to some good use of some fast recharging lightning rods and potion of speed to get distance (as like all the Mim's gang he had that nasty disenchant)

After more time, and looking for more loots , back to town and repeat, i finally run into Mim himself.
Now i can get away, i have a teleport staff and even a few teleport scrolls ready for bad cases.

But this time i would like to get rid of what has been for many of my past character a real pain leading to frustration when they tried to actually fight, it could be just more fun that the usual teleport away.

So how exactly can you kill Mim in current version ?
From the past i remember that he will resist to every kind of elements , so my various elemental rods are then very likely useless as with my luck h's going to resist everything and i have not found a single "neutral" magic missile rod.

Going melee despite i have a very nice Aiglos spear that does amazing damage by now is out of question, i don't trust my luck with Mim disenchant "feature" and to add i have no disenchant resist item of any kind.

I guess i could try to fill him with arrows, though i remember Mim had tons of HP (and can heal) and i have only found really boring weak arrows so far.

So maybe there's something else i'm not thinking about (out of going back to other levels to try to find better arrows or bolts), any suggestion ?

My character at that point

Phase door/arrows yeah. You just need a lot of scrolls and a lot of arrows, but you can definitely outpace his healing.

With good damage output and speed, you can melee him. You'll probably lose a few pluses, but nothing crippling. Otherwise, phase door and launchers are the way to go. Either that or hope to find a wand of Drain Life, which does nonelemental damage, and a lot of it.

Traditional solution is not to kill Mim until you can do so without any problems. I don't think he starts awake, though a Warrior probably doesn't have stellar detection. Phase door and arrows will kill him eventually, I guess, but I feel like it's better to view him as an object lesson of what you want to do later with stuff like Nightwalkers and Black Reavers and Balrogs.

If you've got a good bow, take him out. He has an "excellent" drop, which is significantly better than most uniques.

Thanks for the suggestions.
So i'll have to hunt for better bow/crossbow and better arrows/bolts and stockpile more on the phase doors.

Hopefully i'll get some good ones to deal with this unique.

Unless you are wearing endgame gear (in which case you can 1-shot him) then just shoot him and then melee him. He will be dead before you lose more than a couple of points.
Potions of Speed really help here.

As a warrior? Just melee him. Anything that isn't an artifact will be severely disenchanted, but it can be easily replaced or repaired with enchant scrolls. AC loss isn't a big deal anyway, and you have an artifact weapon. (If you had an ego weapon instead, I'd recommend avoiding the fight.)

Artifacts resist (but aren't immune to) disenchantment. You won't lose more than a few points from any of them. Also, Mim is generally encountered and killed in the midgame, so anything you're wearing then will probably be replaced before you go up against any of the really big bosses. All things considered, it's not worth worrying about the disenchantment. If you happen to have an item that grants disenchant resist around, it's worth swapping to it; otherwise, treat Mim like any other midgame unique.

I've been making a bunch of expeditions at around the depth 40 and fetched quite a lots of stats potions and interesting new items (the helm of Dor-Lomin with built-in ESP is simply awesome).

While moving up to see if i could encounter Mim again, i finally found him again at the depth 38
He was asleep and unfortunately in one of those checkered dungeon location, meaning i wasn't going to be able to use my ranged attack without problems, fortunately the very good steel +9 boots of speed ! i fetched would probably guarantee me to keep out of melee and rain more bolts on him.

Now i had a *destruction* scroll from some time ago, and wondered if in this new version (though even in old ones i never thought about using such rare scroll like that) it could actually deal some damage to a monster while destroying a large section of the dungeon.

At first i thought it could be a waste considering how rare those scrolls are, but thinking about it more that would be a really fun way to waste it and Mim really deserved a big boot to the face

And the scroll did the usual large explosion with as a consequence that there's no more Mim.

I didn't thought it would actually destroy him only damage him but it seemed so as he was nowhere to be found and my ESP found no trace of the bugger.

I checked in the Knowledge of my character and Mim is listed as still being alive.
Hmm ? is that a bug and the game hasn't acknowledged the utter destruction of that annoying unique or is *destruction* not actually being a threat to an unique and only teleporting him out for some reason ?

Oh it looks like i answered my own question , climbing and back, here is he again

(edit : put the screenshots in the spoilers to avoid too big of a post)
let's bolt + phase door him now

Looks like it's working, though he healed himself once already or he should be dead by now

Nearly there, time for Mim to taste this awesomely mighty Aiglos spear (with all the strength and dexterity bottles i got from my multiple depth 40 expeditions, the damage by round is rather impressive)

And ...

...
Victory !
one hit kill there, Mim didn't even had the opportunity to even try his disenchant strike !
Mim paid for all those disenchant he did on my past characters

Artifacts resist (but aren't immune to) disenchantment. You won't lose more than a few points from any of them. Also, Mim is generally encountered and killed in the midgame, so anything you're wearing then will probably be replaced before you go up against any of the really big bosses. All things considered, it's not worth worrying about the disenchantment. If you happen to have an item that grants disenchant resist around, it's worth swapping to it; otherwise, treat Mim like any other midgame unique.
It is not worth losing *any* points on a weapon to take Mim. Take him at a distance or take him with rDis or leave him alone. You'll get him later.

Ehh, if I have a good opportunity to fight him -- clear terrain, no other monsters nearby -- then it can be worth maybe losing 5% of my damage output if it means that he won't get generated again somewhere more inconvenient.

The trouble is when he chips enough of that weapon to reduce the damage giving him more time to chip. Last time I melee-d him he conveniently spawned next to a weapon with reasonable damage that I didn't want, then dropped a better weapon on death. Otherwise I wouldn't bother, he has to drop something better than your current weapon for him to be worth it.
