    It so happend that the next character I played after writing the above post took forever to find see invis; he just picked up the defender, solving that problem. I still went below safe depth because I was lucky with stealth items (and a rogue to boot), so I trusted legendary stealth to not wake up anything before I am gone. I had a scary encounter when something invisible attacked me and brought me down to red health - a dread or dreadlord I guess, there was a message about me resisting str drain. Thankfully I had a scroll of tele level which, alas, is now gone.

    With mords in hands, its straight down to 98 now.

    Edit2: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=21069 Arrived at destination, level 98. Now the process of getting endgame gear and stats can begin. Note how home storage is not an issue (yet).

    This is the most extreme form of diving, I only go this far when I have superb stealth.

          That's bold Estie! I need to move faster. I've categorically ignored rings of the mouse and amulets of infravision. Always been more focused on killing stuff and apparently wasting time of mid levels vs getting deep laying low and gearing up.

          Level 98 with 235 HP's suggests some pretty quick in/out visits I assume or stair scumming (sorry if that's not the right word but mean going up/down to refresh levels).

          Will def try this method as it gets fun quicker for sure.

            Well if you take the stairs and arrive in a large room with a pack of timehounds on one side and a bunch of greater Us on the other, you need to get out of there the next turn period. If you are on a staircase because you have connected stairs option set, taking that is the prime method, if you play with disconnected stairs, its teleport self or destruct or tele level, _maybe_ create door, but your first objective is to get to the safety of another staircase asap. So yes, disconnected stairs make diving a lot more dangerous because you have to take risks at the beginning of each level (as opposed to at the beginning of levels after a town recall only), but the gameplay is the same - once you know where the exit is, you try to get as much as possible from that level without risking your neck overly much.

            If you have never played with legendary stealth before, youll be surprised at how much you can do without waking up anyone. Stair"scumming" sounds liek you go up/down 10 times before actually leaving the safety of the staircase and moving about; thats not necessary at all, provided you have ESP, you can make small forays on most levels.

                Traditionally you would first want to ditch everything that is either outclassed by something you already have or provides something you don't really need. Notably, you have an excess of INT, so automatically ditch the Ring of INT, and probably CON too since you have plenty of ways to reach 18/220. Along those lines, ditch your staffs of Teleport. You don't want to teleport very much in the first place, and with pBlnd and pConf (and pStun) the only situation where they would be nice is if you run entirely out of mana. So just don't ever do that. Honestly I wouldn't even be carrying scrolls. Ditch the Ring of the Mouse, high-level mages don't care about Stealth very much since they can remove anything. You have over 18/150 DEX, so unless you can imagine going back under that, ditch (or store at home) extra copies of damage-immune spellbooks, they're weighing you down. Probably trim down your fire-destructible spellbooks if you still have trouble with weight.

                That would be a start, but it's not the main part of what you need to do. For each object in your home, think ”is there a situation in which I will use this thing, and if so, is it a credible situation”. I expect with most of your weapons the answer is no.

                By the way, if I were you and were also particularly unwilling to sort through my stuff I'd just decide that my stuff is easily good enough to kill Morgoth (all resists covered, INT and CON maxed, pConf pBlnd pStun, ESP, +30 base speed is absurdly good) and just focus on grabbing yourself a staff of the Magi, more RMana, some more !healing !*heal and !life, and ideally some sort of healing staff to stretch your healing a bit further.

                  You've got a lot of crap (low-dice or no-slay) home. You can ditch them all. There is no way you will pick any of them over a +CON weapon.

                  At CL 42, a HE Mage has one need: experience. The quickest way to get it is to melee monsters, combined with stunning spells (ice storm/shockwave), and possibly Rune of Protection (which is very expensive in mana, so be somewhat sparing with it.)

                  You can afford to give up speed, so equip that Shield of Preservation, find a good Slay Undead weapon, and go destroy some undead. (Yes, undead are worthwhile targets for a Mage, because they have relatively few HP.)

                  Also: go deeper. You're likelier to find things like Kelek and MoD of Gondolin/Holy Avenger. (Yes, both are great mage weapons except vs. the final bosses, when you're going to avoid melee.)

                    Looking at what you have equipped, the answer is easy: everything in the home is useless, except the wands of annihilation. Theoretically, you have endgame equipment, the only thing you miss is Kelek's and big heals. Also everything in your inventory that is not a book, a scroll or a potion is pointless and can be left behind.

                        If you want to clear space in your home, you can at least throw away all books, you need only one copy of them. And I don't see why you're using a black DSM of speed +4... when you have a randart armor with +11 speed rotting in the home! Anyway at this point, you will never use anything you have stored, just go on with the game... you only need to collect a few *heal*s are you're set.

                          You are SERIOUSLY understocked on the necessities for the final fight. No big stacks of !Heal, !*Heal, and !rMana at home. Whyever not? You shouldn't be running yourself low on these past around DL 50. For Mana, use -Drain Life wands or archery, or even melee instead of potions for all but the biggest uniques. For !heal: don't fight if you're going to need it, again for all but the biggest uniques. You have any number of zero-fail escapes. Use them.
                          You've got a lot of junk at home--way to many. Tweedledee stat stick crappy weapons. You only need one as a HE Mage: for Constitution. All other stats you either don't need, or--for INT-- can get without trying. For example: DEX and STR only matter if you're using melee...which you can't if you're using a stat stick instead of a big dice weapon.
                          It's worth noting here that a CL 40 HE mage needs to find a way to kill monsters without using Mana, because he needs so much experience. That means either devices (Drain Life), archery, or melee. Otherwise you end end up with no !rMana (and !Heal) when you actually need it. It's also worth noting that Drain Life does more damage than ALL spells until you're very high level--and it doesn't break valuable stuff on the floor.

                            I know that I am understocked on consumables, that is one of the two things I am going to fix next, the other being gathering exp to reach lvl 50.

                            I still would like some tips on what rings and what weapon is the best to use as it is those equipment slots that are giving me the most trouble.

                            Any tips on finding consumables and gathering exp is also deeply appreciated.

                              For experience, it's like I said; use melee or archery for moderately tough monsters. You find yourself using nearly as much !rMana. That said, a CL 48 HE mage is easily strong enough to kill Morgoth. (CL 46, INT 18/220 gives zero fail on mass banishment. That's the last really significant milestone.) You don't actually need to worry about EXP now; just consumables. The best way to accumulate those is clearing vaults and pits (particularly Angel and undead, and non-white dragons where you won't lose potions to cold breaths.)

                              Also pick your fights: clearing the dungeon is almost certainly the reason you are so low on consumables in general. It's usually possible to gather a reasonable stock* of consumables throughout the game.
                              * Big enough to kill the bosses without (much) scumming at the end.

                                I'm not a really experienced player but if you are trying to collect consumables you may also consider wielding the Large Metal Shield of Lonar with cold immunity. If you also switch the armor as advised above you will still have more than enough speed.
