    Some newb questions about inventory and equipment management.

    Hi. I have some trouble deciding what weapon I should use and what items I should maybe leave behind at home, I have big problems with being a bit of a hoarder in games so I can't really decide.

    (Also, I have no idea how to my character dump in any other way so I'm sorry for the trouble.)

    As for the character, the Ring of Protection isn't worth much; AC is low-utility and mages should be avoiding melee range as much as possible. You have enough Cure Critical Wounds potions that you can ditch the CSW and CLW potions, which are pretty heavy. You don't need 17 Word of Recall scrolls; I typically take 5 and can't remember the last time they all got destroyed. Likewise, 30 Phase is a bit overkill; my target is 15 and I rarely run out. And your nine Staves of Mapping are putting a ludicrous strain on your carrying capacity. Ditch all but 1 or maybe 2 of those at home. You can cast Recharging, there's no need to burden yourself with a lot of heavy sticks.

    On the flipside, that Wand of Dragon's Flame should be quite useful for fighting uniques right now. As would the Ring of Acid, which is an easy swap for your Ring of Protection -- but another Ring of Intelligence would be preferable.

    I'd keep using the *Slay Troll* dagger for now; Barrukheled is the only real competition, and you need STR more than you need CON right now.

    You should be able to dive a decent amount; 1000' isn't all that deep for a level-25 character, and you'll find better gear deeper in the dungeon. Just don't be afraid to run from fights.

      I'll second Derakon, with the only deviation being that I'd wield the war hammer. Only +1 to int, but that matters when you kill with spells, and resist confusion, which is pretty high priority for a mage.

        To further expound on the importance of burden: you're running around at -4 speed right now because of all the heavy stuff you're carrying. That means that 40% of the time, an enemy that moves at normal speed will get 2 actions to every 1 action you get, which is a serious penalty. Speed is incredibly important in this game, because it makes you better, or worse, at everything you do. Move faster and everything gets easier; move slower and everything gets harder.

        There's a reason why many players swear by using Rings of Escaping in the early game; that +4 speed is often worth the penalties the ring imposes. I don't use them personally, but at minimum you should be striving to be at +0 speed when you enter the dungeon.

          I have never even heard of anybody playing with -4 speed. I'll go to -1 if I have to, and -2 for very short periods, if absolutely necessary, but I would never under any circumstances let myself get below that unless if was simply because I had just finished looting something and was full of new gear I was about to take back to the surface.

            I play with -3/-4 speed all the time in the early game. Watching me play the recent Vanilla comp on angband.live, wobbly expressed his surprise that I seemed completely unconcerned about my dunadan mage having -3 speed. I was unconcerned because I normally play kobolds, and a kobold mage carrying the same stuff would have been even slower; it wasn't that I didn't think -3 speed was bad, just less bad than I was used to playing with.

            But I also dive much more slowly than most players here, and that may be why I get away with it. A level 25 mage can live with -4 speed on 1000', he just needs to be careful. Having -4 speed at "recommended" depths is... well, I wouldn't know, but people who play the game that way seem to think it's not a very good idea.

            Even I would never carry around 17 scrolls of WoR, though; let alone nine staves of mapping.
            The Complainer worries about the lack of activity here these days.

              Sorry for not responding sooner (busy with newly bought Breath of the Wild) but thanks for the tips. Alv has proceeded even further though I feel again a bit lost in my equipment, any tips, tricks, and help is very much appreciated.

                You've got 6 more points of int than need. Look for gear to replace weapon, ring, or helm. The Westerness axe isn't great, but it's better than your current weapon, as long as it doesn't burden you.

                      Thats looking good; the main objective is to get more constitution now. You need to drink more potions untill you reach the point where you can get ~600 hit points by equipping more +con gear. Currently you could lose some int and speed if needed (+10 speed is acceptable, if you use haste self for dangerous situations).
                      Using con gear immediately wouldnt do much - at the value youre at, it only increases health by a tiny bit, so I like your current setup.

                      I would go deeper (use the create stairs spell in Mordenkainens Escapes), but I would want more stealth if possible. Your current hat does nothing for you, so one way to get that would be to equip a helm with ESP which would allow you to replace your weapon with a defender for more stealth.

                      Also, I would replace the randart ring with a ring of the mouse, if you can still find one - those become rarer as you get deeper. Str is not needed, since your speed is high enough that the small penalty from overweight doesnt matter anymore.

                            My main problem isn't my equipment this time, it's the lack of space at home. I would especially enjoy tips about what items I can afford to toss out as I am a bit of an hoarder in videogames.

                              Ditch the scimitar. (Whip and axe are much better. With HE Mage, you WILL want to be using melee to augment magic by DL 40, just to pick up EXP.) Ditch all the other footgear. Speed beats str/dex.

                              And yes, Ring of Mouse is a better choice until you have lots of HP or banishment. Stealth really matters when monsters can find you from all over the dungeon.

                              I'd consider using the +CON shield, especially with a bit more base CON. 15 base speed is enough for nearly all of the game, especially for a mage.

                              Ditch the XBow of Power.
