In other news, my current character (Gnawer VII) just found a Metal Shield of Resistance [12,+10] at 1350', allowing him to replace his Soft Leather Armour of Resistance [8,+6] with a {good} Blue Dragon Scale Mail. Sometimes you really get the feeling the RNG does this stuff on purpose...
The Complainer worries about the lack of activity here these days.

Correct. Also, the enchantment attempt and the curse-breaking attempt are unrelated, so even if enchantment fails the curse can be broken.

Does a Long Bow just natively get more shots than a Light Crossbow?

I have a Long Box of Extra Shots that shows +1 shooting speed and 3 shots/turn in my character sheet vs a Light Crossbow of the Haradrim with +1 shooting speed which shows 2 shots/turn.

I was surprised because I thought they would have the same shots per turn and therefore the Crossbow would do more damage, but the Long Bow does quite a bit more (which I attribute to the 3 vs 2 shots.)

No, but a ranger gets an extra shot with bows at level 20 and 40.

I keep hoping that this will become race specific, so that a hobbit ranger will have extra shot with sling, half troll ranger with crossbow, etc.

Because Nick won't do this for me now, I have to.

Play O/FA, where different classes get different bonuses to sling/bow/crossbow speed, and different races have bonuses/maluses to sling/bow/crossbow skill.

I'd have thought HT would be a sling too; I don't think they are known for their skill with mechanical devices

Presumably the thinking is that the limitation on being able to fire a crossbow quickly is being able to reload it, which requires pulling back the heavy bowstock (or whatever the term is, I'm not an archer), which a strong half-troll would have no trouble with.

But then neither would anyone else that's maxed their STR score, so...

I agree that's the thinking. A light crossbow would have a lever or a small, probably removable hand crank to actuate the draw. A heavy crossbow would actually have to be manipulated into some sort of mount and fitted with a large, two-handed crank to actuate it on the ground.

In both cases, we've got little more than a token nod to realism (whatever that is).

I found a couple items that I'm not sure the value of -
                        Wand of Disarming
                        Staff of Earthquakes

From reading the spell descriptions I can't really figure out if these items are useful. I dropped them in my house in case they turned out to be something valuable.

Disarming is useful if you have no other good means of dealing with traps.

                          Earthquakes is not very useful.

I found a couple of the higher level magic books and am not sure if any of these spells are useful enough to carry the books around:

Book 6: Raal's Tome of Destruction
                            Cloudkill
                            Acid Ball
                            Ice Storm
                            Meteor Storm

Book 9: Kelek's Grimoire of Power
                            Earthquake
                            Bedlam
                            Word of Destruction

The AOE spells seem useful enough, but I'm not sure enough to warrant losing an inventory space. Earthquake you guys told me wasn't useful, the confusion of Bedlam doesn't sound great since hardly anything seems to get confused, so maybe Word of Destruction.

I'm also using the Mordenkainen's Escapes book for the Word of Recall since I just swapped one item for another. Do Door Creation, Stair Creation, or Teleport Level ever come in handy? Seems like in a pinch I'd just Teleport.

                            Thanks again in advance!

Raal's provides superior ranged attack spells. Try them out.

Dtair creation is great for powerdiving. Teleport level is often safer than teleport. Door creation lets you manage LoS

I'd probably leave Kelek at home as a nong-mage though. At least until the big P

The only spell I use from MB6 is Meteor Storm. It does unresistable damage with AoE much faster than the earlier bolt spells without hitting you too hard with respect to damage per SP. Avoid actually killing with it, as it will destroy drops. Take your target down as low as possible and finish with something else. This one spell is reason enough to carry MB6. Oh, the gravity beam is in there, too. Use it against tough uniques instead of TO. Hit them with meteors, mama storms, Annihilation, whatever, until they are 2-3 cells away, then gravity to move them away; rinse and repeat.

MB7 is useful for recall, stairs, doors and teleport level. I go straight to DL98 (if I'm not already there) as soon as I find it and have high enough level. I think rune is in there, too?

MB9 is for mana storm. Banishment, mass banishment, and WoD are in here, too.
