Calris?

Remove is 20+d20, *remove* is 50+d50, and the Dispel Curse prayer that priests get is clvl+d50. Any failed attempt to remove a curse makes the item fragile; any further failed attempt has a 1 in 4 chance of destroying the item. The roll has to at least match the strength of the curse, otherwise the removal will fail (so with curse levels higher than 40, a regular Remove Curse scroll will always fail).
I successfully removed a level 94 curse from an item yesterday, which was a bit lucky, though even at that very high level the chances of an eventual successful *removal* without destroying the item are better (47.9%) than most people would intuitively think.Last edited by Sideways; July 14, 2017, 12:36.Leave a comment:

you must have been lucky, destruction of items to scrolls is quite common. if you fail to remove a curse, the item becomes fragile, if you fail again, it breaks.
removing curses depends on the power of the curse. when you case remove curse, you will see, for example, siren curse (28), air swing curse, (31), etc.
the number is the power. scrolls of remove curse work well on curses of power 20~30 but will start failing on the high 30s, while *remove curse* works with curses of 50.
i've seen curses of (74) so failing is not weird even with *remove*.
my guess is, *remove* is 100, so if you try to remove a curse (50), you have 50% chance of failing.
plain remove is probably 50.Leave a comment:

It would appear that Angband 4.1.0 has solved all of the problems with cursed items. I found Calris and some boots of Elvenkind with a curse and +9 speed. Two or three store bought scrolls of Remove Curse took care of both items. There were messages that the scrolls "might" destroy the cursed item, but it didn't happen. My character is a hobbit rogue so Calris will probably stay in my home until I need the space, but the boots are good.
I suspect that this action will change in the future and that destruction will become more likely. Removing curses like this is too easy and needs some balancingLeave a comment:

meant Aiglos. Got rid of calris ages ago, too much effort for too little reward.Leave a comment:

Makes sense. +5 CON is very nice, and an endgame ranger doesn't care about aggravation (or aggregation.) Just *destroy* everything, or drop a rune of protection and leave the area.
And it still lets you clear dragon pits, which is a nice help.Leave a comment:

LoL, I am on character level 46 and dungeon level 87 and it is still my main weapon. Can't seem to find anything better for melee. Lots of nice bows though. I think the RNG wants to give me hints so that I don't play my ranger like a warrior and get smeared

You've fixed it yourself. When you play from now on you know that Mormegil is cursed so don't wield itOk thanks for the clarification.
in my case i didn't know about the existence of cursed items, until i found&wielded the Zweihander 'Mormegil' (3d6) (-15,-15) [-10] <-10> , which ended that game because of no remove curse and enchant is too rare to enchant it enough.
Feels like an oversight in the design, but can't say how it can be fixed elegantly. (well maybe it has been fixed already i guess?)
Angband is unlike most games in that you have to learn how to play by playing it and finding what's good and bad by experience. That's why it can take years to notch up your first win, but that makes it all the sweeter.
Although yes, the new curse system in general is a considerable improvement over the old 'sticky' only curse (IMHO)Leave a comment:

In 4.0.5, if I recall correctly, there is no remove curse, however, Enchant scrolls will remove curses. You can enchant Calris up on its to-hit stat as far as +15. Usually not worth it, in my opinion.Leave a comment:

It's certainly worth keeping hold of. He's a ranger, so all he needs is CL35 and Tenser's to use it. And depending on which version he's playing, enchant may be available in the store.
