It would appear that Angband 4.1.0 has solved all of the problems with cursed items. I found Calris and some boots of Elvenkind with a curse and +9 speed. Two or three store bought scrolls of Remove Curse took care of both items. There were messages that the scrolls "might" destroy the cursed item, but it didn't happen. My character is a hobbit rogue so Calris will probably stay in my home until I need the space, but the boots are good.

I suspect that this action will change in the future and that destruction will become more likely. Removing curses like this is too easy and needs some balancing

you must have been lucky, destruction of items to scrolls is quite common. if you fail to remove a curse, the item becomes fragile, if you fail again, it breaks.
removing curses depends on the power of the curse. when you case remove curse, you will see, for example, siren curse (28), air swing curse, (31), etc.

the number is the power. scrolls of remove curse work well on curses of power 20~30 but will start failing on the high 30s, while *remove curse* works with curses of 50.
i've seen curses of (74) so failing is not weird even with *remove*.

my guess is, *remove* is 100, so if you try to remove a curse (50), you have 50% chance of failing.
      plain remove is probably 50.

Remove is 20+d20, *remove* is 50+d50, and the Dispel Curse prayer that priests get is clvl+d50. Any failed attempt to remove a curse makes the item fragile; any further failed attempt has a 1 in 4 chance of destroying the item. The roll has to at least match the strength of the curse, otherwise the removal will fail (so with curse levels higher than 40, a regular Remove Curse scroll will always fail).

I successfully removed a level 94 curse from an item yesterday, which was a bit lucky, though even at that very high level the chances of an eventual successful *removal* without destroying the item are better (47.9%) than most people would intuitively think.

The Complainer worries about the lack of activity here these days.
