First char to reach this deep...

    Hey all,

Haven't been playing Angband for long, only about 3 months. The warrior I'm playing currently is the best char I've had by far, and I'm scooting about DL25 at the moment. Actually just cleared my first vault, pulled the heavy x-bow I'm using and a !DEX along with the - ofTO and ?ofTO. Resistances and Scarabtarices also dropped, which I sadly had no use for.

    Character dump here: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=7777

My main question is what do I *really* need to look out for come near future levels? Right now I've been ripping through most things with little trouble and that scares me. My only other char to reach the 20s was a mage, so I'm used to spamming off those rods of detect doors/traps non-stop, and they are lifesavers. The only things I've been having major problems with are water and light hounds, which I run from. I have no knowledge of uniques coming up or what to really expect, and it would be a shame to lose this character because I foolishly charged into battle not knowing some mob has mean poison breath or something to that avail.

Also, are there any rods/scrolls/staves of detect monster? It would be nice knowing what to expect around the corner, as sometimes it's pretty scary

I don't plan on going much deeper just yet, at least not to 1500', and I desperately need a better amulet (that's the best one I've found, save an amulet of wisdom). Some +speed would be seriously great too. I also have to re-enchant my severely damaged armor from the battle, and upgrades for all those slots would be nice.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to help, gonna dive back down. Maybe the RNG will throw me some boots of speed

    Cheers,

    ~Lunas

Keep running from water hounds - they are just best avoided. You want to get a staff of Teleportation (for escape if you're blinded). You would probably be safe at least 10 levels deeper; your main issues will be blindness and confusion - poison not so much, but air hounds can be annoying. Amulet of Wisdom would probably be better than searching, because it improves your saving throw; also ring of protection is almost useless. The deeper you go, the better gear you will find.

You are doing fine, and should work your way down a level at a time until you get to 1500' or a bit deeper. It would be better if you had some potions of speed saved up, but otherwise you have everything you need to survive at those depths. At this stage, you aren't likely to get instantly killed by any single attack... mostly you need to be smart in how you deal with large groups of enemies like packs of hounds or troll pits. The most threatening bosses in the near future are the ones who move quickly, like Mim and Beorn.

As for detecting monsters with a warrior, there are staves of detect evil which will reveal most threats (but not those pesky hounds). Later on, rods of detection can cover all of your detecting needs.

Be careful with vaults and pits. They often contain out of depth enemies.

          Thanks for the responses

I dived down to 1500' and am having relative success for the most part. I did run into two uniques I had to run from, the Troll chieftain and Ogre chieftain. They hit too hard - there was no way I could go toe-to-toe with them, and phase/shoot was out of the question since I had them backed down a hallway with all their buddies behind

The lack of !speed in the market's been rough, it'll be really helpful when I can replenish on those. Although the stat potions dropping are fantastic.

          Updated dump here: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=7777

I substituted in a ring of strength +2 for the accuracy one I was using, which gives me 4 attacks with the dagger now I also found a defender bastard sword but I don't think it's worth using for now since I only get two attacks with it.

So far so good though, gonna stick around 1500' for a bit longer. Any resists I'll be needing from 1500-2000'? Thanks for the help

1500-2000' is about the depth I start getting annoyed by uniques that ignore walls and by etheral dragons etc, but I usually play mages and you have loads more HP than I would at that depth. You will start wanting real detection, or ESP, so you know when to run away (a drolem or death drake might not insta-kill you... but it might double move you)

I would just chill for a while around 1700 or 1800', if you have any attachment to this character. 2000' should be relatively safe, but you could get out of depth enemies that are anything but safe (mostly big dragons with poison or exotic breath attacks). One of the main things is to build up your constitution so that you have high enough hitpoints to withstand the high damage attacks. In terms of resistances, you need to keep those basic 4 covered, and your next priorities are poison, blindness, and confusion.

At some point in time, you might possibly have 600 or 700 hp and still no poison resistance. You might run into a drolem, and think that with such high hp it can't possibly kill you in a single turn. You might think, it's just a lower case g, how bad can it be? This line of thinking always leads to heartbreak...

Been chilling around 1750' for a while, and it's yielded some nice rewards Updated the dump in the previous two posts. My question now is really about which rings to wear. I like the +dmg one I'm wearing, but the +hp from the con ring or rPoison seem like they might be better suited. Then again, with ESP I can always run from anything that seems *too* dangerous, and without the +11 dmg it nearly halves my max dmg per hit.

Also, does wearing eq with multiple resists of the same type increase said resistance? For example, if I'm wearing 3 items with rCold, do they stack for better overall resistance?

Thinking about heading down to 2000' sometime in the next day or two, but right now the risks are seemingly worth the rewards at 1750'

                Thanks for the help!

*EDIT*: Holy Cow, just found armor of the Rohirrim. Is it safe in assuming that I'm good to dive close or to 2500'?

Equipment with the same resistances do not stack. One is sufficient. You can get extra resistance to certain elements by wearing the resistance on equipment and then using a temporary source of it too (a spell or potion, for example).

Start working your way down and finding some new enemies to take on.
