    Optional wilderness as birth option

Could wilderness be possible as a birth option, similar to "no stairs" and "no selling"?

Have it disabled by default, but allow it to be enabled for anyone who would want to have wilderness in angband.

    Play FAAngband

Actually, I'm really hoping that one day Nick will be able to upgrade FAAngband with the wonderful things he's done for Vanilla. My favorite Variant ... after Rocketband, of course.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

ZAngband was one of the first variants to have a wilderness, in fact. I think it, Kangband, and Cthangband were the leaders on that front.

I would certainly like to enable the possibility of a wilderness in the Vanilla codebase, and I wouldn't rule out the possibility of having wilderness in V as a birth option. That said, there a number of other things higher on the priority list

And when it is playable with OS, then I'll go for it.

What is OS, and why do you keep referring to it?

Been wondering the same thing. Mac OS? OS/2? OS stands for Operating System.

Thank you for all these great suggestions.

I haven't tried an Angband variant yet, because aside from this forum I find it a little confusing to figure out what variant offers what. There are so many variants

I've heard much about Zangband, but it's no longer maintained and superseded by Poschengband? And according to this list, Poschengband is Windows-only and no Linux or BSD?

I've also heard a lot about Tome2 and I think it helps that both Zangband and Tome2 are part of the Debian repository. Why aren't FAangband and Poschengband in the Debian repository?

About the wilderness in Angband, I think that would be interesting to have. Most major roleplaying games (Diablo, Elder scrolls etc) offer an open world and gamers are willing to invest in that. More often it looks like "open world" is a requirement for any modern game, regardless of game genre. From what I've read on this form, the reason Angband still doesn't have a wilderness is because some players don't want a wilderness and others can't agree on the form of wilderness. Personally, I think the promise of an open world to explore is already great and any wilderness is better than no option for a wilderness. Once Angband has a wilderness option, it can always be tinkered with for improvement over time. I hope the wilderness feature isn't put on hold for years because of discussions over form, while we just want an open world to explore in Angband aside from the already excellent dungeons it offers.

Poschengband is open source. If you're brave, it even has Linux installation instructions!

High time for Beleriand to happen, IMO.

Thank you, Patashu. I tried following the Poschengband Github manual and almost got it to compile. Last minute I'm running into the error: /usr/bin/ld: -r and -pie may not be used together

Google says -pie is a default enabled Debian GCC option that must manually be disabled in the compile script.

I also tried FAangband. That one compiles, looks and plays wonderful! Was FAangband made to be merged back into Angband? It offers a Vanilla Angband option without the wilderness, so if that would be made the first option we'd have Vanilla Angband with two optional full-featured Wilderness game modes, right?

I understand a lot of work has been done on Vanilla Angband, so I'm not suggesting this would be easy. Just a thought

FAangband was (is?) my variant, and I'm currently Vanilla maintainer, so you are obviously trying to flatter me

Certainly my long term plan is to redo FA on the cleaned up V codebase. It's just that I have to decide when I've ruined V enough and it's time to let someone else pick up the pieces.
