    Feedback on 4.0.5 from a 3.0.3 (?) player

    Greetings,

I have not thought about *band in the longest time.
But I have a new machine (on which I cant compile hellband, even with the makefile of Angband), so I started a Dwarven Priest.

    Feedback thus far
    * It would be wonderful if Alt O would open the File Open Dialog
    * You got rid of Charisma, and it's not missing
    * You default the no sell option as default, very evil
    * I understand that otherwise people would never try it
    * It makes finding dragon armor or rare tomes such a disappointing find
    * I love the squelching approach
    * My first character got one shotted by a kobold archer when descending the stairs, giving me the right amount of paranoia for my 2nd character
    * 'n' repeat support in stores is no longer existant, too bad
    * Stores in general, even after hours of playing still feel hokey somehow, I cant put my finger on it just yet, but it seems to eat keystrokes maybe? I bought/sold a few times the wrong item
    * I like the default screen set up, related to that also that OOD monsters are red
    * Did priest not have a destroy traps spell? That seems to be missing.
    * The +1/-1 stat potions have been terrible enough (maybe because Charisma is missing ? ), that I only used the Wisdom ones, until I hit 18/200 WIS
    * I like the new mushrooms as a novelty, but they don't seem to appear a lot after dlevel 25, is this by design?
    * I reached level 30, no save scumming
    * Are you ready for something else ? Hellband 0.8.8 is out! *

    My thoughts after 3 weeks:

-1+1 stat potions are good. Sometimes you get a bad roll, yes, but for a caster char, toughness is almost certainly worth drinking.

Priest will have its destroy traps late with Umbarring Ways prayer. By the time it is basically useless.

Sell option is good being set to 'no-sell' imo. Early scumming with shops probably isn't going to make anyone a better player.

OoD monsters showing in red was definitely a good discovery to me also.

No-one misses charisma out of real life.

Priest gets a traps spell Holy Infusions same as always. Meantime, rods of trap disable are pretty common, as are wands.

I agree charisma was a silly stat, but things should probably be made more expensive for low-level players. Getting _Tele for under 3K is huge.

Isn't it in Ethereal Openings? It's a movement spell, kind of.

Agreed. Prices could stand to increase by at least 25% and probably more. Back in the day I remember buying stat potions for around 30k and now they're 24k.

I think the stat potions are too frequent in the shops. I love to see em there ofc but I think I got bit too many of them just from shops.

The mining thing. Has this ever been considered to be removed? Does it contribute to some playstyle?

I'd say double the stat-potion prices. Speed, Restore Mana and Teleportation are too frequent and too cheap there. By cheap I mean they are basically free given how useful they are.

@Sphara--Teleportation and speed have always been relatively common in the black market. Healing pots not so much.

Funny, now that money matters, I have been mining which I have not done in at least 15 years. I like it, it gives color to the dungeon layout.

"... now that money matters..." I'm not sure what you mean. Is it that you are playing no-selling and need to get money by mining instead? Actually, with no-selling the money drops and money found on the floor are automatically increased to compensate. I almost never mine for treasure as I find it a waste of time. If @ needs $, far easier to kill a bunch of monsters for it.

The only time I ever mine is if I realize I don't have quite enough cash left over for ?Recall, early in the game.

I will usually mine whenever I am playing dwarf and can thus dig through walls in reasonable time with an ordinary weapon. It's not worth carrying a shovel as a mining swap for any character. Non-dwarf warriors may want to carry one for breaching vaults around the late midgame, but by then cash isn't worth going out of one's way for.

Forget mining... play ironman and ignore money altogether.
