I guess this is a personal thing for me being a little bit compulsive - but for me, pseuso-id is part of the 'method' with which I play this game. At least 50% of my games are with warriors (and most of my relatively successful games, because I'm not that good) and I will pick up every weapon and wait for a pseudo-ID before I decide to either ID it (good or better), sell it to broker, or destroy it (cursed).
When I play a priest or ranger with weak pseudo-ID, I just find it frustrating because I never know how long to wait. I hate wasting scrolls of ID on something I'm not sure about - so if I've waited for what I think is long enough that I'm sure its standard, I'll sell it and all too often it's good, and the shopkeeper laughs as he rips me off. I don't really care that much but I dread the day when I sell what I'm sure is a standard dagger, and I see the shopkeeper laughing as he takes Nimthanc or something off my hands for a handful of gold.
The thought of losing an artifact like that fills me with dread. The thought of wasting countless scrolls of ID so I can be *really* sure also fills with me dread. Admittedly once I'm past the early levels and swimming with gold from magic items etc its not an issue, it just makes the start a bit more frustrating.
So - why? It only affects the early game and not the late-game, so it can't be a genuine balance concern surely? Can't we just give *all* characters strong pseudo-ID? I know I'm probably beating a dead horse but still...
