    Weak pseudo-id - why?

I guess this is a personal thing for me being a little bit compulsive - but for me, pseuso-id is part of the 'method' with which I play this game. At least 50% of my games are with warriors (and most of my relatively successful games, because I'm not that good) and I will pick up every weapon and wait for a pseudo-ID before I decide to either ID it (good or better), sell it to broker, or destroy it (cursed).

When I play a priest or ranger with weak pseudo-ID, I just find it frustrating because I never know how long to wait. I hate wasting scrolls of ID on something I'm not sure about - so if I've waited for what I think is long enough that I'm sure its standard, I'll sell it and all too often it's good, and the shopkeeper laughs as he rips me off. I don't really care that much but I dread the day when I sell what I'm sure is a standard dagger, and I see the shopkeeper laughing as he takes Nimthanc or something off my hands for a handful of gold.

The thought of losing an artifact like that fills me with dread. The thought of wasting countless scrolls of ID so I can be *really* sure also fills with me dread. Admittedly once I'm past the early levels and swimming with gold from magic items etc its not an issue, it just makes the start a bit more frustrating.

So - why? It only affects the early game and not the late-game, so it can't be a genuine balance concern surely? Can't we just give *all* characters strong pseudo-ID? I know I'm probably beating a dead horse but still...

If you *really* want to ID everything you find, stockpile stuff at home 'till you're "swimming with gold from magic items". Or play a mage, they get Identify for a few SP at level 11. And finally, someone who has an un-ID'ied *thanc and doesn't notice it is... *DUMB* ^.^

Well, given that Nimthanc is 2d4, yeah bad example I guess

Still the same does apply for metal caps etc.

I just destroy items instead. If it's an artifact you can't. I just keep un Ps Ided from npcs in the first ~15-20 lvls.

I sold Holhenneth that way once, by the way. Nevermind, there'll always be a next chance.

I have the same pet peeve as hugorune. I can't stand weak psuedo-ID. When I play a ranger, my home is always full of junk until I have lot of money or the identify spell, and I spend a whole lot of time waiting for my mana to regenerate so I can keep casting identify. It's yet another reason I hate mages -they're so pathetically fragile I rarely make it to clvl 11 to get the identify spell.

In DaJAngband, almost all classes get strong pseudo. There are only two that don't (actually only one, the mage, at the moment, but the tourist should be in the next release), and those two get the identify spell pretty early.

            My old variant DaJAngband:
http://sites.google.com/site/dajangbandwebsite/home (defunct and so old it's forked from Angband 3.1.0 -I think- but it's probably playable...)

I'm now careful enough to get to Clvl 11 without any greater problems - after that you have both Satisfy Hunger and Identify.

I am playing a priest (used to playing thief and warrior). Can I get priest to squelch Good Items after I Id them.

weak psuedo id is part of something called class balance.

Or, more specificallly, "class annoyance factor balance".

Weak psueod ID is only a problem for me in the early game as the ID process seems to speed up as you level. For the cost of a few food you can always head into the dungeon and rest and wait for the ID to happen
