Oh, also - what do I do to retain my ancestors' knowledge of monsters and such? Is that a cheat option or something (if so, I'm not using it), or do I have to do something specific upon character death/rerolling?

Yes: reroll by opening the savefile of the deceased ancestor character.

Lagduf the Snaga got my rogue this time, and because I read a Scroll of Recall instead of Phase Door ... note to self, make triple-sure you're pressing the correct letter key.

Had a Longsword of Venom, too. Frick.

Made me feel a bit better to have my first enemy encounter in the dungeon be Grip and beat him at 0 hitpoints due my last hit being "a good hit!" and go from level 1 to 4 instantly. Yay. Saved some tedium time.

Fun moment of the day: Wandering around dungeon level 4 with a full inventory, looking for up staircases. Find a hazy potion on the ground, no room in my backpack ... ah what the heck, I'll just quaff it here and now and hope it's not salt water.
