Whelk is now playing "for real."

Previously I've always played with the Cheat Death option on. I didn't play a terrible lot, and having to start over frequently was detrimental to the experience for me. Still, I never beat the game.

I've decided that it's finally time to lay "for real" with none of the cheat options on. It does add more to the experience, I've found. I look around more often and pay much more attention to detail. I respect and fear certain creatures rather than just rushing them and hoping I don't have to run all the way back from town after I die and resurrect.

So, my first dedicated "for real" character is Modi the dwarf priest. I'm level 8 and know the entire first book of prayers. My gear is all off-the-shelf normal stuff except my fabulous filthy rag [1+3] that I found in the dungeon and my latest exciting find, an everburning lantern.

I've only gone 3 levels down in the dungeon. I was unfortunate enough to learn Cure Light Wounds dead last in my prayerbook, and Slow Poison second to last, so I had to be extremely careful. I detect traps, doors and stairs every time the screen changes. I'm rather scared of kobold shamans and novice warriors and I avoid large rooms that contain monsters with any ranged capabilities. I PAC (blessing) before every single fight.

So far it has been rather fun even at the early levels, which is saying something. I'm sure I'll die plenty of times before I learn enough to survive till the later levels.

The going is slow with my first "real" character since A) I don't have much time to play anyway and B) I'm being extremely careful so that I don't die. My dwarf priest is level 13 and knows all the prayers in the first two books now. Still using some pretty basic equipment - bought a flail and gave it +3 damage, all I could afford for now. I've been using a sling to finish off stuff that runs away. The lowest I've been in the dungeon is level 9. Nothing too exciting to report.

That being said, I've cheated a priest all to the mid-40s before, so this is all a bit repetitive. I'm considering playing a rogue some of the time, but I don't really know a good starting set of stats. I've always wanted to play a kobold rogue - what would be a good starting set of stats for that? Any suggestions?

Okay, I just found some green dragon scale mail +9 on a cave orc at dungeon level 9. Wow. How freakishly rare is that? I'm going to be even more cautious now so that I don't lose it. My everburning lantern is no longer my most prized possession.

I know what you mean. When I get pretty high (I think my highest is in the low 20's clvl) with my char and die I don't feel like starting the same char over.

I think 18/20 STR and 18/10 DEX will give you two blows with a dagger/main gauche. I think it is possible to also get 18 CON. Any extra points can go into INT, but that is a lesser priority.

Then it'll hurt even more when you die. Go faster instead. When you dive faster, stuff like that comes up a lot more often.

Or I could just never play the character again and sleep well at night knowing I sitll have my green dragon scale mail. It's mine! My own. My precious ...

I did that once when I found Nan... Nir... Nox... uh, whatever, one of the *thancs - then I suddenly decided to continue playing and died instantly ^^"

Doesn't matter what the class is, starting stats should have 17 (base) in con and str. With the autoroller, you can get 17 base in a third stat. For a character that will melee (warrior, rogue, paladin), that last 17 should go to dex, ranger and mage should put it in int, and priest should put it in wis. The third stat is the only one that is ever a question, and then only if you know what you are doing.

As a mage, I pump my INT up to 18/60, Strength and Con 11 (I think con's a bit higher, I don't remember now).

                        I think
                        str: 13
                        int: 18/50
                        Con: 16

is a lot better. Once you have decent survival skills, the 18/50 is just about as good ad 18/60. And it's nice to be able to put on a good ring and get your CON above 18 very quickly.

If my setting's good enough to get to 500' in the first dive reliably, then it's good enough to reach stat gain when being careful enough. Then the stats don't really matter anymore. ^.^

Well, shoot. Kobold rogue died on level 10. Ran into Orfax who kept teleporting me to him (and a mob of yeeks) whenever I'd try to phase door away. Finally managed to land in a seperate room with only a few hitpoints left - a baby green dragon was there waiting to help escort me into the halls of Mandos.

Lesson learned: As tempting as a group of weak monsters looks, check the entire room to make sure there isn't a unique hiding in there somewhere.

The good thing is I didn't lose anything nicer than a Torch of Brightness.

Oh, also - what do I do to retain my ancestors' knowledge of monsters and such? Is that a cheat option or something (if so, I'm not using it), or do I have to do something specific upon character death/rerolling?
